Slough Town, Athenian League champions, looked anything but in this game against Southall on Tuesday night. Southall, playing their first home game, gave their supporters every hope of a successful season with some skillful football which bemused the Slough defence.

But as on previous occasions, Slough raised their game just enough to notch two goals through Reid and James in the second half, and collect both points.

The dull first half went in Southall's favour although Slough pressurised the home goal in the 19th minute and gained three corners in 90 seconds.

But it was Southall all the rest of this period, and they came close to scoring in the 26th, the 33rd and 41st minute.

In the second half, Southall took complete control right until the 77th minute, when Roger Day, the Slough skipper, lashed his side into action and after a goalmouth scramble, with the Southall defence clearing off the line, Reid ran in through the advancing defenders to slot home goal number one.

Within four minutes, before Southall could get back into their stride, Slough were two up. Mead crossed from the left and the Southall keeper dropped an easy ball, and there was James to push it home.

Two goals in four minutes, and the game, as a contest, was over.
