These teams met in the league encounter at the Dolphin ground on Saturday, before a very small attendance, the wet weather probably keeping many away.
Slough won the toss and took advantage of the wind by defending the Uxbridge Road goal. At the start Slough had all the game, but the splendid defence of Higgs, Boulter and Young prevented any scoring.
Early in the game Patterson and Fountain had openings, which were not made full use of. A corner was awarded Slough, and this being nicely judged the forwards tried to rush it through, but without success. Slough got in a good run and shot, but Higgs just managed to clear. Staines occasionally broke away, and once Anscombe looked like scoring, but Werrell cleverly turned the leather around the upright, and the corner was got away.
At the opposite ends the custodian failed to effect a good clearance from pure it, and the scrimmage ensued resulting in a foul against Patterson. Shortly after. Mr fine chance right in front of goal following a smart centre by Patterson stop then the visitors woke up for a while, and Hancock put in a shot which went just over the bar.
Commins and Bevan both endeavoured to open the scoring for Staines, but were to well watched by Wilmot and Poole. It was close on half an hour before Slough opened the scoring from the penalty. Wright centred the ball and Patterson was fouled in the prescribed area as he was about to shoot. Werrell came down and took the place kick, easily defeating his opposite number.
The homesters still continue to have nearly all the play, and Wilmot, Fountain and Poole all had a go at the visitors goal. Shortly before half-time the two left-wing players brought the leather down, and from a centre Patterson shot. The goalkeeper half cleared, but before he could reach the leather a second time Patterson had another try, this time being successful, thus giving his side the lead by two goals to nil.
In the second half Slough had faith a strong breeze, and the game was more evenly contested. Rain fell heavily, making matters uncomfortable for both players and spectators.
Shortly after the crossover Fountain ought to have scored, having only the goalkeeper to beat. Staines showed improved work, and Werrell had stopped a swift drive from the foot of H. Bevan.
Subsequently Slough increased their lead through the agency of Fountain, who met a centre from right and notched a splendid goal.
The visitors tried hard to reduce the lead, and several times Slough were saved by the clever clearances Werrell, Anscombe, and his cock, both testing his abilities. After Denton had missed a chance, Anscombe, who had been very energetic, beat Werrell with a nice a bleak shot 10 minutes before time.
After this both sides try to increase the score the final result was Slough three goals, Staines one.
