Despite the late team changes we succeeded in bringing off the double, incidentally our fifth this season. Before this game we had never won at Wealdstone.
After a shaky start we settled down to play copybook football. We hit the posts and bar several times before Ingram fired in a terrific volley. Hewlett managed to push it on to the upright but McCrohan netted the rebound with a first timer. That was the only score before the interval.
For the opening twenty minutes of the second half, Wealdstone forced the pace and this period definitely saw us up against it. An equaliser came following a corner, but gradually we fought back and were on top for the rest of the game. McCrohan restored the lead with a glorious header and Clements clinched the issue five minutes from time.
The feature of the match was the great display given by our half-backs. A well-known pressman told us that he considered Williams, Brown and Thomson to be the finest amateur club line he had seen over the last twenty years - praise indeed.
Behind them Elderfield and Fussell were sound. Bob in his usual quiet, effective way, with Gil doing a "happy warrior" and thoroughly enjoying himself. Peter brought off some grand clearances and although he had a few anxious moments, usually came out with the ball well held.
McCrohan was our most dangerous forward and Ron Clements turned in his best game for us so far. Ingram did a host of clever things and Johnny Clements kept the right wing alive with good centres. Jock Mackenzie did not have a lot of luck for the home defence were prone to crowd him. He changed placed with Jim in the second half and had quite a large hand in our revivial.
