Alan McCrohan
The high wind and cast iron ground spoiled play somewhat, but both teams gave good account of themselves. Kicking with the doubtful advantage of the wind, we scored through Alan McCrohan, a neat opportunity well taken. The teams were well matched and Peter brought off some brilliant clearances.
The Hitchin goal had a lucky escape when Clements hit the underside of the bar with Jones well beaten. Changing over our play improved against the wind, and we were the more dangerous team.
Our visitors made the mistake of going in for big kicking, which looked rather good but did not get them anywhere.
During one of our many attacks on the Hitchin goal, MacKenzie was heavily downed when in the act of shooting. Everyone expected a penalty o be given, but the referee waved play on.
Within minutes Fussell cleverly sold the dummy and put Jock through again, but this time his shot hit the base of the upright.
Ten minutes from time, Hitchin forced a corner. A poor kick was caught in the wind, did a couple of dips and eventually finished in the net direct. A pure fluke but it gave Hitchin the division of the points.
McCrohan justified his selection and with a little more support will soon prove to be one of the best wingers in the League. Fussell had a good game and took over the job of rover in the manner born. The attack was well led by McKenzie, but Clements and Fisher found the attentions of our opponents a little trying. Our half line, Brown, Williams, and Thomson, compared favourably with Scoot, Chamerlain and Westwood, reputed to be the best line in the League. Peter, Bill and Bob formed a grand rearguard that gave as good as it received, particularly Bill.
