Our visitors turned up three players short, but we were able to loan them Johnny Morgan, Cliff Williams and Jack McGill. These three played very fine games for the Green, pulling their weight like the very good sportsmen they are.
The frost-bound ground levelled the two teams and although we were pressing the Green for the major part of the game, our display was not impressive.
We were crowding each other within shooting distance and it was a long time before we opened our account. We hit the woodwork several times before Fisher and Clements gave us a two goal interval lead.
We quickly went to 3-0 on resuming, a delightful movement by all on our right flank ending with Clements neatly flicking the ball past Harper. A crazy misunderstanding between Peter and Les enabled Wood Green to reduce the lead but MacKenzie made it 4-1 with a brilliant effort. Near the end we conceded a penalty - a rather drastic decision considering the state of the ground, and that concluded the scoring.
The players were badly handicapped by the conditions, and it is hardly fair to judge them on this game. MacKenzie had a very successful match and Fussell, when changing to inside left, also produced good football.
The half line was very sound, although the wing halves were prone to advance too high during the second half; however the opposition was no wonderful, and eagerness to help in the attach was the reason. Tremaine and Elderfield were never to o happy on the ice like ground but both kicked a good length and were quite safe.
Apart from the one incident already mentioned, Peter West gave a good account of himself in goal.
