At York Road on Thursday evening last these teams met in the above competition. The game attracted a large crowd, £31 being taken in gate money. Both clubs were short of full strength.
Slough, who won the toss and attacked the canal goal, were first to settle down and Lines missed and each chance from Harmon's centre. A left wing corner was forced, but the Maidenhead defence cleared their lines and Bruce was called on to save from Pakenham Walsh, who shot well after a neat dribble.
For a time Slough pressed, without troubling James, but eventually the Maidenhead keeper saved well from Payne.
Slough took the lead at 13 minutes, Smith conceded a corner, which Morris placed well, and Snow tried a shot; the ball would have gone by but Smith breasted it out and Payne scored.
Maidenhead pressed hard after this and forced two corners off Evans, without success, but at 18 minutes, Rose, receiving from Barton, tried a shot from the touchline, and the ball went into the net over Bruce's head, a splendid goal.
In subsequent play each goal had a narrow escape, Bruce just getting away a shot from Ashby, and James getting his hand to a ball which Saunders turned into goal.
At 30 minutes, Rose, receiving from Smith, worked in and beat Bruce with another good shot.
Four minutes later Baldwin tried a long shot, and James fell with the ball; Wells kicked it in the net, but the referee decided that Baldwin's shot had already scored.
Five minutes later Slough got another soft point, when James and the Maidenhead backs got mixed up, and Payne sent across for Wells to shoot into an empty net. Slough led by 3-2 at the interval.
The second half, which was played in fast falling darkness, was more or less a scramble.
In four minutes another mix up with James and the Maidenhead backs let in Lines, who easily scored.
Maidenhead urged on by the crowd, made a determined effort to save the game, and three times Pakenham Walsh came near scoring, one of Bruce's saves being very lucky. However, Slough kept their goal intact, and gained their first victory in four games with Maidenhead this season by 4 goals to 2.
