Slough Town continued their preparations for the 2025/26 season with a hard-fought goalless draw against National League side Southend United at Arbour Park.
This penultimate pre-season fixture was billed as Slough’s toughest test to date – and it proved to be just that, with a competitive and well-contested 90 minutes played out in front of a strong midweek crowd.
The fixture was arranged as part of the deal which saw midfielder Leon Parillon join Southend from Slough earlier this year, and the visitors also included former Rebels striker Slavi Spasov in their starting lineup following his transfer earlier this summer.
It was Southend who had the first big opportunity of the game when they were awarded a penalty in the 10th minute after Harry Boyes was brought down in the area. However, Charley Kendall blazed the resulting spot kick over the bar.
Slough grew into the game and created a number of promising chances. Jared Myers was at the heart of much of Slough’s attacking play in the first half – first feeding Jaiden Drakes-Thomas for a shot that was turned wide, before testing the keeper himself after another surging run.
Tyrique Clarke went closest for the Rebels, curling an effort against the post on 33 minutes, with Jordan Greenidge firing over the rebound – though he was flagged offside.
Southend responded with some neat passing moves, but the Slough defence remained resolute. Leon Parillon’s long-range drive was comfortably saved by Adam Desbois, while a later effort from Keenan Appiah-Forson was bravely blocked.
The game remained goalless at the break, with Slough more than holding their own against strong opposition.
After half-time, both sides made a number of changes, which slowed the tempo slightly. Scott Davies, introduced from the bench, almost made an immediate impact as his curling free-kick was well saved by substitute keeper Andeng Ndi following a sharp counter-attack.
Slough continued to create half-chances, including a dangerous cross from Josh Adepoju that narrowly evaded Trialist C at the back post. The visitors threatened occasionally, but neither side could find a breakthrough.
Despite the lack of goals, this was a performance full of positives for the Rebels, who more than matched a side that came within touching distance of promotion to the EFL last season.
Slough’s final pre-season match comes this Saturday at Wealdstone, before attention turns to the start of the National League South campaign.
