Slough Town continued their pre-season preparations with a spirited second-half comeback to defeat Basingstoke Town 2-1 in a testimonial match honouring former midfielder Simon Dunn.
In front of a healthy crowd at the Winklebury Football Complex, the Rebels paid tribute to Dunn’s outstanding service to both clubs — and despite trailing at the break, responded with two goals in three second-half minutes from Tyrique Clarke and Wiktor Makowski.
Before kick-off, both Simon Dunn and Nathan Smart were welcomed onto the pitch with a Guard of Honour, in a classy gesture recognising their many years of service to Basingstoke and Slough respectively.
Slough began on the front foot and looked to seize control early on, with Jared Myers and Jordan Greenidge looking particularly sharp in the final third. Myers showed relentless energy on the byline and almost found Greenidge with an early cutback. Soon after, good build-up play from Nnaemeka Anyanwu and Myers led to another chance for Greenidge, whose effort was pushed away by the goalkeeper.
Slough kept pushing — Myers drove inside and forced a deflection wide after beating two men, while Makowski powered down the right flank to deliver a teasing ball across the face of goal, just evading Greenidge at full stretch.
The backline, which included Reiss Greenidge making his first pre-season appearance following his return from holiday, looked composed and alert when tested.
Despite a dominant first-half display from the Rebels, they fell behind on the brink of half time. A penalty was awarded to Basingstoke, and it was fittingly Simon Dunn who stepped up to convert — calmly slotting home to make it 1-0 in the 44th minute. Moments later, he was substituted to warm applause from all corners of the ground, bringing his playing contribution to a close in the perfect setting.
Slough made three changes at the break — Tyrique Clarke, Henry Ochieng, and Noah Hay replacing Anyanwu, Trialist A, and Brian Nelson — and almost drew level straight away. Clarke struck the underside of the bar with a well-timed half-volley inside the box just seconds after the restart.
The pressure continued, with Roth sliding in Jordan Greenidge, who was again denied by the onrushing keeper. Makowski also saw an effort blocked after another defensive lapse from the hosts.
Further changes followed, including the introduction of Bryce Gough and Josh Adepoju, as the Rebels maintained their push.
Slough were finally rewarded for their persistence in the 77th minute. Clarke picked up a loose ball around 20 yards out and let fly — his strike taking a heavy deflection and wrong-footing the goalkeeper to level the scores at 1-1.
Just three minutes later, Slough completed the turnaround. Nnaemeka Anyanwu, back on the pitch after his earlier withdrawal, dazzled on the left with stepovers before sliding a pass across goal to Wiktor Makowski, who took a neat first touch and rifled it into the net.
There were late chances for Basingstoke — a headed effort blocked by Peter Ojemen and a dangerous free-kick that forced Adam Desbois into a flying save — but Slough managed the closing stages with composure to record another positive result in pre-season.
