Slough Town booked their place in Third Round Qualifying of the Emirates FA Cup after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chichester City at Arbour Park. The match, a replay following a 2-2 draw at Oaklands Park last Saturday, saw the Rebels advance to face Chatham Town in the next round.
The home side came out of the blocks quickly, putting immediate pressure on Chichester. In the 6th minute, Josh Jackman fired a volley which was blocked after a dangerous cross, setting the tone for what would be an intense first half. Chichester almost made the Rebels pay for a defensive mistake soon after when Jimmy Wild's long-range effort hit the outside of the post, narrowly missing the target.
However, it was Slough who struck first, taking the lead in the 11th minute. John Gilbert delivered a well-placed corner into the box, with Jackman getting the initial contact. The ball was played back into the danger zone by Jeanmal Prosper, allowing Gary Abisogun to poke home from close range, making it 1-0.
Just two minutes later, Slough doubled their lead in quick succession. A free kick from the right found its way to Prosper, who headed the ball back across goal. Chichester’s goalkeeper Kieran Magee was left stranded as the ball floated over him and into the net, giving the Rebels a commanding 2-0 lead within 15 minutes.
Slough continued to control the game, though Chichester applied pressure in the wide areas, especially through Wild and Ethan Prichard. A brilliant run by Wild in the 20th minute saw him deliver a perfect ball across the six-yard box, but no teammate was on hand to finish.
Despite the early setback, Chichester responded and had a golden opportunity to get back into the game just a minute later. Joe Clarke thought he had pulled one back, only for the goal to be disallowed for handball. Clarke was also shown a yellow card for his protests.
John Ufuah went close for Slough soon after, firing just wide of the post from a tight angle.
Ten minutes before the break, Abisogun intercepted a pass inside his own half before driving all the way into the Chichester box and firing a shot wide as he looked for his second goal.
The second half saw Chichester fight hard to get back into the game, but not before Abisogun blazed a shot over the bar after pressing by Gilbert, missing a golden chance to make it 3-0.
In the 75th minute, Wild almost halved the deficit when his effort on the turn rattled the crossbar, with Slough struggling to clear their lines.
Slough made tactical substitutions to maintain their lead, with Kweku Lucan, Kareem Isiaka, and Leon Chambers-Parillon entering the fray to bring fresh legs. The Rebels defended well, but Chichester continued to push, eventually finding a breakthrough in the 89th minute. Joe Moore pounced to set up a nervy final few minutes for the home side.
With five minutes of added time, Chichester pressed for an equaliser, but Slough held firm.
In front of a crowd of 519 at Arbour Park, Slough Town ultimately held on for a 2-1 victory, securing their place in the next round of the Emirates FA Cup. Chichester’s late resurgence wasn’t enough, as Slough’s early goals proved decisive in what was a well-contested cup tie. The Rebels will now turn their attention to their trip to Chatham Town later this month, as their FA Cup journey continues.
