Slough Town suffered a frustrating defeat at Arbour Park as Chippenham Town overturned a half-time deficit with two second-half goals to claim all three points.
The Rebels started brightly, carving out a number of early opportunities. In the eighth minute, Slough player-manager Scott Davies had the first real sight of goal, but his free-kick from just outside the area cleared the crossbar. Shortly after, a dangerous delivery from David Ogbonna picked out Slavi Spasov, but the forward couldn’t keep his effort down, sending it over the target. Johnny Goddard also went close, his driven shot flashing across the face of goal.
Slough continued to probe, and captain Josh Jackman struck a sweet half-volley from the edge of the box, only to see his effort well held by Chippenham goalkeeper Will Henry.
The breakthrough finally came in the 24th minute thanks to a moment of brilliance from Lewis Miccio. Davies’ delivery into the box was touched down, taking a deflection off a defender, before Miccio unleashed a thunderous shot that rattled the underside of the crossbar and bounced over the line, marking his first goal for the club.
Chippenham had a golden opportunity to level in the 29th minute when Leone Gravata broke through on goal, forcing a fine low save from Charlie Horlock. The rebound fell kindly for a visiting player, but the follow-up effort was skied over the bar.
Slough nearly doubled their advantage just past the half-hour mark when Ogbonna capitalised on a misjudged defensive header, but Henry did well to smother the danger.
The visitors suffered a setback just before the break when their captain, Luke Haines, was forced off with an ankle injury. Slough headed into half-time with a deserved 1-0 lead, but there was a sense that they might need a second goal to put the contest beyond doubt.
Chippenham started the second half with renewed intensity and had an early penalty appeal waved away when Luke Spokes’ flick struck the arm of Edon Pruti inside the box. Moments later, Spokes had another chance from a free kick just outside the area, but his effort was deflected behind for a corner.
Slough had the next opportunity as Ogbonna let fly from distance in the 54th minute, but Henry was equal to the task, making a comfortable save. However, Chippenham restored parity just two minutes later when Gravata produced a composed finish, curling the ball into the far corner beyond Horlock’s reach.
The visitors then turned the game on its head in the 59th minute. Harry Parsons forced a smart double save from Horlock, but the ball ricocheted off the unfortunate Jeanmal Prosper and into the back of the net for an own goal, giving Chippenham a 2-1 lead.
Slough responded by pressing forward in search of an equaliser. Just past the hour mark, a long throw from substitute Guy Hollis caused problems in the box, falling to Goddard, whose volley was well held by Henry. At the other end, Caine Bradbury saw a goal-bound effort blocked before Horlock produced a vital one-on-one save to deny Gravata on a counterattack.
As the game entered the final twenty minutes, Slough kept up the pressure. A low driven effort from Ogbonna took a deflection and whistled past the far post for a corner, before Henry gathered another attempt from Goddard. With five minutes remaining, Slough continued to cause problems from Hollis’ long throws, leading to frustration on the Chippenham bench, as manager Gary Horgan was shown a yellow card.
Slough pushed for a late leveller and nearly found one in stoppage time. A deep cross from Prosper was nodded down by Goddard, but Dan Bayliss couldn’t quite wrap his foot around the ball. Then, in the second minute of added time, substitute Ollie Spicer delivered an inviting cross, only for Bayliss to send his header wide.
The final opportunity came when Francis Amartey whipped in a dangerous ball, but Spasov mistimed his jump, failing to make clean contact.
Slough were left to rue missed opportunities as their hopes of securing a third consecutive home win were dashed. The Rebels will look to regroup ahead of their next fixture at Welling United on Saturday.
