Slough Town slipped to defeat at Longmead Stadium, with two late goals sealing their fate after Francis Amartey had pulled the Rebels level in the second half.
Scott Davies’ squad was again tested to the limit, with John Gilbert serving the final game of his four-match suspension, Guy Hollis injured for a few weeks, Sam Evans not fit enough to make the squad and Kweku Lucan and Lexus Beeden still absent. There was a further blow during the game, with Dan Bayliss suffering an ankle injury which resulted in Davies replacing him at half time.
An early strike from Dan Roth was comfortably held by goalkeeper Matt Rowley, and Sean Shiels headed over the bar for Tonbridge Angels in a slow start to the game.
Angels went close on 21 minutes as Jamie Fielding put a header wide from a Shields free kick in the centre of the Slough box. The Rebels tried to respond by creating an opportunity from a Johnny Goddard free kick. The ball took a touch off Josh Jackman, which had Rowley scrambling across his goal line.
Slavi Spasov – looking for his first goal in seven matches – curled an effort from outside the area which deflected just wide of the post. The resulting corner kick from Goddard was headed down by Bayliss for Leon Parillon to shoot on the turn, and again the ball was deflected behind.
But Tonbridge carried a lead into the break thanks to Taylor Maloney’s strike on 41 minutes. Picking up the ball around 25 yards out, he curled a fantastic effort past Charlie Horlock to give his side the lead.
Slough came out with an increased tempo at the start of the second half, with Parillon driving forward and having a strike blocked. Goddard’s follow-up hit the roof of the net as he aimed for goal.
David Ogbonna became increasingly involved in Slough’s attacking play as the Rebels upped the tempo, and a low effort was comfortably held by Rowley.
Angels almost doubled their lead on 67 minutes when Maloney’s deflected effort fell to Harry Ottaway to strike at goal, which was saved by Horlock and then dropped onto the top of the crossbar.
Just a minute later, Slough were level. Francis Amartey – who was sent on for Dan Roth just five minutes prior – embarked on a strong run down the right before dribbling into the Tonbridge penalty area and firing low across Rowley and into the far corner.
It was the signal for the match to open up in the closing stages, but it was the hosts who would take the lead with four minutes remaining. A ball into the box was missed by Trevan Robinson, but it did find Sean Shields at the back post, and he made no mistake by placing the ball underneath Horlock.
A late flurry of chances for Slough in the Tonbridge goalmouth came to nothing, with Parillon, Goddard and substitute Ollie Spicer all denied – and in the sixth minute of added time, a defensive mistake led to Robinson taking the ball around a stranded Horlock for an easy finish to wrap up all three points.
