Slough Town produced an impressive performance to secure a dominant 3-0 victory over Chippenham Town on a wet evening at the Thornbury Surfacing Stadium.
Goals from Sam Evans, Dan Bayliss, and Francis Amartey, coupled with a solid defensive effort, earned the visitors a vital three points as they moved up to seventh place in the National League South table.
The game began with Slough showing strong intent, pressing high and creating early pressure. John Gilbert’s industrious play led to a good chance for Sam Evans, whose shot was well saved by Chippenham goalkeeper Will Henry in the 14th minute. Despite their bright start, Slough had to withstand a scare a minute earlier when Alex Gravata broke through and saw his effort blocked, with Harry Parsons' follow-up shot also snuffed out by the resilient Slough defence.
The breakthrough came in the 24th minute. Evans, capitalizing on a lapse in concentration from the Chippenham defence, powered past Nat Williams before calmly slotting the ball into the back of the net to give the Rebels a deserved lead.
Slough continued to control proceedings, though they couldn’t find a second goal before the break. Slavi Spasov had a promising opportunity in the 40th minute but failed to connect cleanly with the ball.
Chippenham struggled to carve out clear chances, with their frustrations evident when Parsons was booked in first-half injury time for a challenge on Kwadwo Bugyei-Kyei. The first half ended with Slough firmly in command at 1-0.
The visitors wasted no time doubling their lead shortly after the restart. Dan Bayliss stepped up to take a free kick in the 49th minute, rifling a low, powerful strike past Henry to make it 2-0 and record his fourth goal of the season.
Chippenham responded with a flurry of efforts to get back into the game. Parsons set up Tom Mehew for a shot, only for the attempt to be deflected wide. A powerful strike from Ed Spokes was expertly handled by Slough goalkeeper Charlie Horlock, who was in fine form all evening.
The hosts introduced substitutes Aaron Amadi-Holloway and Matt McClure just before the hour mark in an attempt to spark a comeback. Amadi-Holloway forced a close-range save from Horlock in the 75th minute after being set up by Will Dawes. However, Slough’s defence, marshaled by Jeanmal Prosper and Dan Roth, held firm.
Slough weathered Chippenham’s pressure and remained a threat on the counter. An audacious strike from John Gilbert in the 67th minute cannoned off the crossbar as the Rebels looked for a third.
The game was put beyond doubt in the 90th minute when Slavi Spasov embarked on a mesmerizing run from the corner flag, weaving through multiple defenders before unselfishly squaring the ball to substitute Francis Amartey for a simple tap-in. The goal capped a super evening for Slough, who bounced back from Saturday’s disappointing defeat against Welling United.
Debutant Kwadwo Bugyei-Kyei played a vital role in Slough’s defensive stability, while Dan Roth was imperious in an unfamiliar right wing-back role, repeatedly breaking up Chippenham’s forays forward. Chippenham, despite showing flashes of promise through Gravata, Spokes, and Dawes, lacked the cutting edge to breach Slough’s disciplined defensive setup on the night.
The victory, combined with results elsewhere sees Slough Town climb back into the final playoff spot, with a trip to Chelmsford City next up on Saturday.
