Slough Town’s impressive start to the season took a slight hit on Tuesday night as they fell 2-0 to Weston-super-Mare at the Optima Stadium.

Despite the defeat, Slough remain in a strong position with five wins from their opening seven National League South games and will be eager to bounce back in a huge top-of-the-table clash against Hemel Hempstead Town at Arbour Park this Saturday.

Both teams entered the match having won their last four games, and while Slough ultimately came up short, their resilience was evident throughout the contest.

The match began with Weston-super-Mare applying early pressure, keeping Slough’s defense busy. Dylan Morgan was particularly lively for the hosts, earning the first corner in the seventh minute. Slough’s first real opportunity came in the 19th minute when Henry Ochieng fired over from distance after a promising spell of possession.

Weston-super-Mare continued to dominate possession, with Nick McCootie and Luke Coulson proving to be a constant threat. McCootie nearly opened the scoring in the 35th minute, but Slough goalkeeper Charlie Horlock was quick to smother the chance. Moments later, Coulson forced Horlock into a low save, keeping the scores level.

Slough’s defence, marshalled by Lexus Beeden and Dan Bayliss, worked tirelessly to keep the hosts at bay. Beeden made a crucial goal-line clearance in the 27th minute, denying what seemed a certain goal. Despite their defensive efforts, the Rebels struggled to create clear chances and the teams went into half time deadlocked at 0-0.

The second half saw more pressure from Weston-super-Mare. They thought they had taken the lead in the 49th minute when Sam Avery headed home a Coulson free kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside. However, the hosts didn’t have to wait long to score. In the 57th minute, Coulson’s in-swinging cross evaded everyone and found the back of the net, giving Weston a deserved 1-0 lead.

Slough, now trailing, found it difficult to break down Weston’s organized defence. Their best opportunity came in the 67th minute when substitute Kweku Lucan’s shot was blocked before it could trouble goalkeeper Will Buse. The Rebels’ efforts were limited, with a rare chance from substitute Ollie Spicer curling wide in the 81st minute.

Weston-super-Mare sealed the win in the 89th minute when Dylan Morgan capitalized on defensive errors to slot the ball under Horlock, making it 2-0 and securing all three points for the hosts.

The result sees Weston-super-Mare move level on points with Slough, both teams now on 15 points in the league standings. Slough will look to regroup quickly ahead of Saturday’s showdown with Hemel Hempstead Town.

Man of the match honours went to Weston-super-Mare’s Luke Coulson, whose deliveries from set-pieces and open play were instrumental in securing the victory.

Manager Scott Davies will be keen to see his side bounce back in front of a home crowd at Arbour Park. With Slough now in third place, two behind leaders Hemel Hempstead, a strong turnout from Rebels supporters could be crucial as the Rebels aim to regain their winning form.
