Slough Town continued their impressive start to the National League South season with a commanding 3-0 victory over Aveley at Parkside.
The Rebels secured their fourth win in five matches, a result that catapulted them to the top of the table with 12 points. This performance capped off a perfect Bank Holiday weekend following their hard-fought victory over Hornchurch on Saturday.
The victory was sealed by goals from Gary Abisogun, John Gilbert, and Kweku Lucan, with Slough also maintaining a clean sheet. This was a significant result for the visitors, particularly for Abisogun, who opened the scoring with his first goal for the club after an injury-plagued first season.
The game started at a brisk pace, with Slough taking control early on. The home side, Aveley, managed to test Slough’s goalkeeper Charlie Horlock early, with Harry Gibbs forcing a save from a long-range free kick in the 7th minute. However, Slough soon found their rhythm and began to assert their dominance.
Slough’s breakthrough came in the 21st minute, following a well-worked move through the midfield. Henry Ochieng and Leon Chambers-Parillon combined to find John Ufuah in the box. Ufuah’s low shot was parried by Aveley’s goalkeeper Jack West, but Abisogun was on hand to pounce on the rebound, calmly slotting the ball into the net to give Slough the lead.
The goal seemed to invigorate Slough, who controlled the remainder of the first half. Despite a few stoppages in play, they continued to create chances, with Kweku Lucan coming close to doubling the lead when his deflected shot rattled the crossbar in the 40th minute. Aveley struggled to create any significant opportunities, and Slough went into the break with a deserved 1-0 lead.
The second half began much as the first had ended, with Slough on the front foot. Lucan and Abisogun continued to cause problems for the Aveley defence, with the former heading over the bar from an offside position in the 59th minute after a fine piece of skill by Abisogun to bring down a long ball and set up the chance. However, Slough did not have to wait long for their second goal.
In the 67th minute, Slough were awarded a penalty after Ufuah was clipped inside the box. Ufuah stepped up to take the spot-kick but saw his effort saved by West. Fortunately for the Rebels, John Gilbert was quickest to react, latching onto the rebound and firing the ball into the back of the net to double the lead. The goal gave Slough a cushion and effectively ended any hopes Aveley had of mounting a comeback.
Slough continued to press and added a third goal in the 85th minute. This time, it was Lucan who got on the scoresheet, finishing off a well-crafted move. John Gilbert, who had been instrumental in the midfield since coming on as a substitute, played a precise pass across the box, allowing Lucan to slot the ball past West and seal the victory. The goal capped off a fine individual performance from Lucan, who was a constant threat throughout the match.
Scott Davies made several substitutions late in the game, with Roth, Timberlake, and Ogbonna all coming on to ensure fresh legs as Slough saw out the final minutes. The Rebels maintained their composure and professionalism to secure a well-earned clean sheet, with the defence marshalled superbly by Dan Bayliss and Louis Lomas.
Slough will now aim to extend their unbeaten home streak to 26 games when they face Weymouth next Saturday. If they avoid defeat, it will mark one year since the Rebels last tasted defeat on home soil, an incredible achievement that speaks volumes about the consistency and resilience that Scott Davies has instilled in his side.
