Slough Town are through to Monday’s third round qualifying draw after this victory at Southern League Premier Division South side Hayes & Yeading United.

Two goals from Nathan Minhas on his 26th birthday proved to be enough for Scott Davies’ side to claim their place in the next round, with the Rebels having missed several other opportunities, particularly in a dominant first half display.

The hosts’ goalkeeper Jacob Adams was kept busy early on, saving from Jeanmal Prosper and Johnny Goddard and also from a long-range strike from Matt Lench.

Approaching the half hour mark, Slough went close with Minhas hitting the post from Lench’s low cross from the right.

Slough kept the pressure on and from a Lench free kick, Dan Bayliss turned the ball back across goal for Prosper, whose header was turned over by Adams.

United had the ball in the back of Rohan Luthra’s net on 37 minutes with Sam Ashton finishing after great work from Mauro Vilhete, but the striker was offside. Shortly after, Vilhete brought a full-length diving save from Luthra, who denied the forward’s well-placed shot from 25 yards.

But the breakthrough arrived for Slough a few minutes before the break. The Rebels hit the woodwork for a second time – this time through David Ogbonna – but Slough kept the attack alive and Goddard slipped the ball to Minhas, who swivelled and fired powerfully into the bottom corner.

Chances were few and far between in the second half, with Vilhete firing a dipping shot over the bar from 25 yards and Jamie Hanlon firing wide from inside the box for Hayes & Yeading.

Late on, Slough sealed the game with a second goal. The Rebels broke down the right, with Goddard working space for a cross on his left foot, which found Minhas at the far post who had the simple task of nodding the ball past Adams.

Slough saw the game out to record their third consecutive victory. There were more positives, with 18-year-old Harrison Marquez making his debut from the bench late on, and 17-year-old Ollie Spicer also making a substitute appearance to get more senior minutes under his belt.
