A professional performance saw Slough Town run out winners in the first match of 2024 at Arbour Park as goals from Nathan Minhas, Munashe Sundire and Slavi Spasov sealed a comfortable victory against Taunton Town, writes Freddie Gatrell.
The first half began well for the Rebels but goalscoring chances were hard to come by in the opening 25 minutes. Early efforts from Sundire from the edge of the area and Dan Bayliss’ headed effort inside the box failed to test Taunton’s Dan Lavercombe, with Slough wasteful with their finishing.
The moment the Arbour Park faithful had been waiting for came on 36 minutes, with a well struck Matt Lench corner kick falling at the feet of an unmarked Minhas, who made no mistake from close range to score his 11th goal of the campaign.
Taunton’s front line struggled to cause many problems for the Rebels in the first half, with Dan Lincoln barely being tested.
The second half started slowly, with neither side causing many problems in the opening stages, though Jarvis had an effort disallowed for offside after the ball was flicked on by Chamberlain. David Ogbonna was unlucky to not smash home Slough’s second of the afternoon, after being set free behind the Peacocks defence. Closed down quickly, his low snapshot was inches from finding the bottom right corner.
Slough’s hard work was eventually rewarded, as they added a second goal late into the second half through the brilliant Munashe Sundire, who impressed throughout the match. Sundire found space and time on the edge of the Taunton 18-yard-box to fire a curled finish past Lavercombe and into the bottom corner to put the Rebels firmly in the driving seat.
Second half substitute Spasov added the cherry on top of the performance for Slough, scoring his third goal in as many appearances in the 88th minute. A neat cross from David Ogbonna found the head of Leon Chambers-Parillon at the back post, who nodded the ball down invitingly for the striker, who could not miss from such close range.
This result moves the Rebels 9 points clear of the relegation places into 16th, whilst Taunton sit in 19th on 29 points. Next up for Slough Town is an away trip to Bath City next Tuesday, where 3 points will again be the aim for Scott Davies’ men.
