With almost the last kick of the match Slough defeated Maidenhead in their re-played cup tie at
the Dolphin ground on Wednesday. There was a fairly large number of spectators for a midweek match, but the gate only amounted to about £27, owing to the number of unemployed, who were admitted at half price. Neither side was at full strength, the brothers Care both being absentees, one being on the sick list and the other on business in London.
This is the first time for two years that the Riversiders have turned out a team which did not include one of the Cares. Slough were minus Dale, Walker, Grant and Vice.
Slough bad the beet of the opening exchanges, and it was not long before Norris and co were
troubling the defence, Harmon clearing four shots in as many minutes. Then the visitors broke away and Richards tested Money with a straight one, whilst Venables made a capital run and
centre, which found Franklin well placed, but he shot wide.
Slough continued to have the best of the exchanges, but it was not until seven minutes from the interval that a quick pass by Norris enabled Pugh to open the scoring.
Crossing over with a lead of 1-0, Slough where expected to do better with the wind, but although they attacked almost continuously, they were unable to score. They struck the uprights and the crossbar, while Harmon manipulated all shots that came in his direction, and he was ably assisted by Bevington.
All the forwards had a turn, and even the halves joined in with no better result. Meanwhile, Drewitt and Marcham bad changed places.
Eight minutes from time Maidenhead equalised. It came from a free kick. A long shot was saved by Money, but in stooping to gather up the hall be twisted round, and Richards dashed forward and kicked into the goal before he could recover himself.
This success seemed to put new life into the visitors, and they made a bold effort to take the lead. Drewitt had an opportunity of doing so on one occasion, but he shot badly. A minute later Pugh missed an easy chance, and it was left for Tatton to shoot the winning goal from a beautiful centre by Glover, the whistle sounding as soon as play restarted.
The game was very well conducted and very few fouls were awarded.
