Owing to the congestion of fixtures standing to the account of both the above clubs the first round tie of the Windsor Hospital Cup was played at York Road, and the game attracted a crowd of over 2,000 people.
Neither side was quite at full strength, Maidenhead being minus P. M. Care, Hancock, and, of course. Vic Blay, the respective positions being filled by C. D. Care, J. Grinsted and A. Prior, while L. Drewitt appeared at left back.
C. D. Care won the toss and Maidenhead defended the canal goal. They were first to attack, and from Franklin's pass Blundell had to punch out from Tucker, while from the latter's pass Charlton just missed the mark.
Slough got away on the left and Baldwin shot, Care getting the ball away, but after a spell of midfield play Slough took the lead with a very soft point.
McConnell punted the ball well down the field. and Beavington. instead of clearing, put back to Care, who, with Norris upon him, only managed to kick the ball a yard or two, for MORRIS to easily score.
Maidenhead were soon on the run again, and after a fruitless corner, Blundell saved a free-kick by Drewitt. At the other end, Griffiths (twice) and Morris made good efforts for Slough, but nothing tangible resulted, and Maidenhead pegged away, Joe Grinsted being a valuable asset to the side, many of the attacks coming from his passes.
A corner was forced, and a good shot from Charlton was cleared, while Blundell had to run out to stop Franklin. A breakaway on the Slough right provided a corner off Grinsted, but Glover put behind; and then Maidenhead equalised.
As Tucker was working through, he was fetched down by Payne just clear of the area, and with the free kick Beavington scored with a shot well clear of the custodian.
Tucker was hurt and had to leave the field for a few minutes. Slough almost took the lead from a corner, for when Payne shot, Drewitt just managed to kick the ball to Norris, whose shot Care pushed out and Payne eventually put by.
Following another corner, Care saved well from Griffiths and again when Drewitt almost put back into his own goal. At the interval each side had scored once.
Maidenhead set up a strong attack on resuming, Marcham centering for Tucker to put over, while Deane broke through but slipped near goal, and Marcham shot wide.
A defender almost put through his own goal, but the custodian punched away; and then Deane was hurt in a rush for goal and was unable to take any further part in the game.
Slough did much pressing, but the shooting by the forwards was generally off the mark, though Duke Care made some good saves at intervals from Norris, Griffiths and Glover, and once ran out some distance to stop Baldwin, who was temporarily "laid out."
Maidenhead could now do little beyond occasional breakaways, and from one of these Charlton shot very wide when he might have done better. One or two corners to each team brought no result, and just before time Charlton got in a hard scoring drive which was luckily headed out by a defender. The end arrived with the interval score unchanged.
