The problems continue to mount for sad Slough. Sunday's defeat at Gateshead was their third in succession and now takes their run without a league win to nine games.
Adding to the concern is the prospect of being docked points by the league for fielding an ineligible Mick Putnam in last week's 2-1 loss at Farnborough.
"It's very possible that we could lose three points," said press officer Ollie Haywood. The matter goes to the Vauxhall Conference Committee and even though Slough seem safe — and that despite their recent form — the loss of points at this bite stage could yet see them sltp dangerously close to the relegation dogfight.
The incident led to the resignation of club secretary Ray Franks, who had forgot to register Putnam.
On Sunday it was more a case of forgetting what to do with the ball, as Slough had the better of a disappointing game at Gateshead but failed to turn handsome amounts of possession into efforts on goal.
It should also be remembered that the North East side had played and beaten Yeovil just 21 hours earlier, but if that was to Town's advantage they showed few signs of capitalising on it.
Steve Scott was recalled to the side while Neal Stanley had to be replaced early on by young Hickey — not surprisingly Slough lacked a degree of cohesion.
As has become something of a tradition at the club in recent weeks it was defensive sloppiness that handed their 'rivals the advantage..
Richard Watkiss mishit his goalkick but there should have been no real damage as Darren Anderson, 20 yards out, took control and decided to return the ball to his goalkeeper. His backpass however was pitifully weak and the alert Steve Cuthbert made Slough pay, advancing on Watkiss before drilling Gateshead into the lead. As usual a Slough error meant an opposition goal.
Rebels were however enjoying most of the play and Pluckrose really should have levelled when Hickey put him through. His shot however was weak and Slough went in at the break a goal down.
Slough's second half opportunities were limited, but chasing the game as they had to, big gaps appeared at the back and into one of them went to that man Cuthburt, this time rounding off a five man move in emphatic style.
They did get one back when with three minutes remaining Anderson hoisted a long ball out to Pluckrose and he found Scott inside. Scott may well claim different but his long range lob was surely not intended to float straight into the net. It was small consolation.
