FA Trophy
Cool finishing after weathering a blaze of Saltash attacking gave Slough a resounding victory in their FA Trophy replay on Wednesday night.
Neal Stanley (2), Jimmy Brown (2) and Gary Dodd made their chances count, as the gallant Cornishmen became increasingly frantic, to earn the Rebels a first round home tie against GM Conference League Dagenham, on December 19th.
As in Saturday's match, incidents flowed from the start, with a jittery Slough 'keeper Trevor Bunting twice letting the ball slip through his grasp for corners in the early minutes.
But the Rebels nerves were settled by a ninth minute goal when Wayne Wanklyn headed on Tony Knight's long free-kick and Stanley hooked the ball home. Saltash hit back with a furious barrage, in which Mark Rowe's 20-yard effort was brilliantly turned away by a full-stretch Bunting.
Jimmy Jacobs kicked John Durham's header off the line and Keith Batley lashed a shot onto the crossbar. But when Slough broke out, they proved the more incisive. Kenny Wilson's effort was saved at the near post by 'keeper Dave Philp and Dodd dipped a shot just over the bar.
And in the 35th minute, Wanklyn laid on a chance for Dodd on the edge of the area and his left foot shot beat Philp.
A minute later, Saltash pulled a goal back as Bunting was left helpless by a Steve Thompson free-kick that flew through the wall.
Then, in the 52nd minute, the Cornishmen drew level with a header by Durham after good work on the left by sub Alan Rogers.
This time it was Slough's turn for an immediate response. Kenny Wilson crossed from the left and Brown headed in from close range.
In the 63rd minute, Wilson was left free to roam again and drove a telling low cross to the far post, where Jimmy Brown helped himself to his 18th goal of the season. And although Saltash battled away,
Slough had the game in their control. Wilson hit a shot against the post and in the final minute, an unmarked Stanley headed in Brown's long cross from the right touchline.
