The record books will show the Rebels extended their unbeaten away league win to nine games, but those at Wexham Park on Saturday were less than impressed.
For strife-torn Walthamstow, forced to switch the game to Slough after the closure of their ground, came close to taking only their third point in 19 outings.
It took an injury-time strike from Keith White to put the issue beyond doubt, as Alan Davies's men again showed their recently found, frustrating ability to play well one day and badly the next.
This came only 48 hours after a sound show at Wokingham. “It wasn't particularly good," admitted Davies, "but when you play like that and get three points it's a bonus. "There were a few tired limbs out there and the game went on around one or two of them. But when you see teams beating Walthamstow week in, week out, it's not that easy. They didn't look a bot-by Nick Walkerton of the table side and you've got to give them credit, for that. “
Certainly, the Rebels never seemed likely to repeat the eight which Bognor put past Avenue, or even the six which Bishop's Stortford rattled in against them although they had enough chances.
A couple of goal-line clearances were included among four or five close calls for the visitors before Slough went ahead after 21 minutes. From a deep Wilson freekick, Jeff Bateman rose well to plant a firm header into the corner.
MacMahon's first class distribution was one of the bright spots in what rapidly degenerated into a very lack lustre opening period performance. Sensing that their minus 53 goal difference could even be improved, Avenue pushed forward and looked the team most likely to score after the break.
Wheeler and Clark caused concern, while all Slough could respond with was a miserably off-target effort by Brown. Avenue’s sad finishing denied them a share of the spoils, and when Davies finally decided on a change six minutes from time, he could have taken almost anybody off in favour of McLeod.
MacMahon saw a shot deflected off goal before, in the 91st minute, Keith White struck a 15-yarder after Avenue had failed to clear a Jacobs' free-kick.
Thankfully, we didn't have to wait too long after that for the final whistle.
