The old year ended with straight talking... which helped the new start happily.
Slough's New Year's Day victory was as deserved and convincing as the scoreline suggested, with transfer listed Jimmy Brown grabbing two goals to put his old club deeper into relegation zone.
“After last Saturday (the 1-3 defeat by Bromley), when we were more than disappointing, there was a little bit of straight talking at training on Tuesday night," revealed manager Alan Davies. “The players got together and a few of the experienced lads had a few things to say and so did their team-mates. And they responded well with a good, solid performance."
Des MacMahon, freed by Windsor and snapped up by Davies at that training session, made a sound debut in midfield, as Slough fielded a 4-4-2 system one which could become a regular feature if it continues to work as well as it did in the wet, muddy conditions last week.
Jimmy Brown was recalled to the attack and put Slough in front in the 15th minute. Listed after being unable to sustain a tremendous scoring run in the first three months of the season, he got on the end of Wilson's corner after a touch by Wheatley.
The visitors were knocking the ball about more fluently than on most occasions recently and, as the first half wore on, seemed increasingly likely to win comfortably. Battling to end a depressing run of eight successive league defeats, Wokingham underlined their grave problems in front of a goal they've only netted once in that barren run whereas Knight and White went close to extending Slough's advantage. The surprise was that we had to wait until the hour before the impressive Rebels did go further in front, as Brown laid on for skipper Keith White to finish clinically.
The hosts always looked particularly vulnerable at Corners and "Chalky" went desperately near to making them pay for their uncertainty with another. But after ex-Windsor striker Chris Yates, scorer of only two league goals this term was subbed, the home side scored their first for two months.
After Wheatley had cleared off the line and Alexander had hit the bar, Mark Harris netted from close range. Slough completed a league double seven minutes from time, when Waites crossed for Brown to score with a super diving header.
