Rebels' manager Alan Davies still believes they have a championship chance, despite the fact they went 23 points behind leaders Wycombe after losing to the second-placed team at Wexham Park on Tuesday night.

Slough, who have five games in hand on both the. leading sides, and really needed to bounce back from the cup disappointment, battled well without getting too much luck.

"It was important that we got a result, but we've still every chance of being there or thereabouts at the end of the season," said Davies. "If you look at the games coming up, I am sure we can get some results.”

Basically, Rebels lost a second successive game for the first time this season because of their inability to turn a lion's share of possession into worthwhile opportunities in front of goal.Yeovil weren't particularly impressive.

For although Gerry Gow's side completed their 11th away game without defeat, they certainly lacked the 'flair of the Wycombe side which destroyed Slough two months ago.

The kindest thing to say about the first half was that it was well-contested. Neither side looked like scoring and the only on-target shot to be saved came in injury time from Keith White .Saturday's hero Trevor Bunting was bundled to the ground by John McGinlay in an incident, which angered the Slough manager and the good-sized crowd.

Bunting had gathered the ball long before the Scottish midfielder piled into him. The 'keeper was OK after treatment, but the player escaped without even a caution and Davies commented: "I don't usually criticise referees, but he was very, very poor indeed."

The decisive goal came in the 50th minute. Slough defenders seemed rooted to the spot, as Linney's free-kick came back off the bar and Carl Zacchau shot in from close range via the underside of the bar.

Thanks to Tilley's persistence, Dodds was able to cross for White, who struck the outside of the post with a firm shot and that turned out to be the closest Slough came to scoring.

"It was disappointing. We did well and had a lot of possession, without putting their goalkeeper under too much pressure. And when you're not knocking in the goals, and lapse for one moment in the box, that's what happens. But I thought we deserved a draw at least.”
