Jimmy Jacob's sizzling injury time volley gave Slough victory at the death on Tuesday and ended a long wait for manager Alan Davies.
“When I first arrived at Wycombe as assistant manager they told me Jimmy Jacobs was one hell of a volleyer," said Davies. “I’ve been waiting three and a half years to see it! “
It was worth the wait as, with 92 minutes on the clock, Jimmy Brown curled a cross to the far post, where Jacobs let fly with a right foot volley that fizzed home from 15 yards.
There was still time for Billericay defender Tim Collins to rattle the bar with a 20 yard free-kick, but Jacob's spectacular effort was a worthy way to climax a hugely enjoyable Vauxhall-Opel League match.
The Wexham Park crowd were justifiably concerned at the way the Rebels defence were found wanting for pace against an attack in which Kurt Davidson and winger Alan Hull were outstanding.
But few will be complaining if the run in to the end of the season produces a few more such hearty helpings of excitement. There could have been an even greater dollop of goals if Slough had not been so wayward early on.
“We could have had the game sewn up by half time," admitted Davies, whose side found themselves 2-1 and 3-2 down. “When you claw your way back into the game you have got to keep what you have got. Too many players were trying to win the game on their own. We got stretched at the back when there was no need. We have experienced players who should know better. “
The thrills started in the second minute when Jeff Bateman headed against the bar. Eight minutes later Keith White nodded Derek Harris free-kick across goal for Rowan Dodds to control and shoot high into the net.
Billericay went fluently forward, Trevor Bunting blocking a Tony Jacobs shot and Stephen Playle heading off the line from Collins. The visitors' giant ‘keeper Mark McCutcheon made a superb low save from White's header after 32 minutes and watched the otherwise highly impressive Dodds mess up an easy rebound.
Dodds and White both had only McCutcheon to beat as they ran on to long passes, but Dodds hit the post and White the 'keeper before Billericay's 39th minute equaliser, Davidson looking well offside as he took a pass and slipped a shot under Bunting.
After 49 minutes the Essex side went ahead as Hull outpaced Bateman, saw his first effort well saved by Bunting and nudged the ball over the line.
Hull hit the post five minutes later, but in the 56th minute Wilson clipped the ball out of McCutcheon's reach for White to head an equaliser by the far post.
Yet two minutes later it was 3-2 as Hull's centre was met by Davidson's scoring header.
Brown should have done better than shoot straight at the 'keeper from a good position, but after 71 minutes Dodds pounced again.
He turned on a loose ball to score from six yards as Slough were appealing for hand ball following White's shot.
Collins' booking for bringing down Wilson, two good Dodds efforts and then the injury drama were still to come.
