SLOUGH TOWN chalked up their best League goal-scoring performance of the season at Wexham Park on Saturday, when they defeated Hitchin Town 4-1, earned £40 bonus into the bargain, and kept within striking distance of the top teams in the table, but it was not a game of very much merit and less excitement.

Failure and success in the game largely centred round two players, Tim Turl, of Slough, and Bradwell, the Hitchin goalkeeper. Turl did everything well, while Bradwell had a nightmare of a game, finishing his unhappy performance by being booked two minutes from the end, following Slough's fourth goal.

In the first ten minutes no-one could have forecast the final result, for during that period, Hitchin were in complete control and most of the play was in the Town half of the field, but hey presto, Slough suddenly achieved a major breakthrough. From a free kick, Micky Kiely collected the ball and passed to Barrie Metcalfe who neatly put it past Bradwell.

With two minutes remaining before the interval, Micky Kiely, lurking in a dangerous position, was played on-side, and he had the simplest of chances to slip the ball past Bradwell, who was so angered by the situation that he felt it necessary to throw mud at his co-defenders to relieve his feelings.

The second-half saw Hitchin again start in total control and within three minutes they reduced Slough's lead when Paul Giggle left Strong standing and played a perfect pass to Hodge who blasted the ball past the stranded Teale.

At this stage Hitchin looked ready to give Slough a hard time, but two minutes later the pendulum swung back to Slough in an extraordinary manner. Another free kick from Gane ricocheted off Baldry's hand into the path of Turl, and as the spectators shouted for a penalty, the Slough right back shot hard into the roof of the net over the outstretched arms of Bradwell, who was well off his line.

Bradwell redeemed himself by diving at full stretch to keep out a shot by Metcalfe, but as the minutes ticked away Hitchin again took control and Mulkern looked to be on target, but Turl was on hand to charge the ball down.

Three minutes from time, Teale held a corner under the bar and Slough, controlling the ball well, forced Hitchin to concede a corner on their left. Barrie Friend placed the ball over the home defence and Ian Cooke shot it into the net. Again this annoyed Bradwell to such an extent that he chased the referee with such fury that he was cautioned.

On the stroke of time, Teale dropped an awkward ball at the feet of Hodge but his shot was scrambled clear.
