BY scoring two late goals at Wheatsheaf Lane on Boxing Day Slough secured their first victory in the league since the two clubs first met in the Premier Division of the Isthmian League.

Referee Rogers delayed the kick-off in the hope that the pitch would dry naturally, but the elements failed to provide the hoped for miracle and the game eventually got under way at 11.40 before a disappointing gate of about 350, most of whom appeared to have made the short journey from Slough.

Slough, who have learned a lot from their strengths during recent weeks opened confidently and moved the ball around well with Dave Russell and Peter Feely linking well - Slough always threatened to take the lead.

Staines defended well in the mud and water and gradually they took the game to the "Rebels" who were themselves forced to defend desperately and just before the interval they took the lead when McLean shot over Teale's outstretched arms.

In the second half Slough were determined to take the game to Staines and immediately they stormed back into the attack. Micky Kiely replaced Barrie Friend and as Slough threw everything forward they were unlucky when a brilliant solo effort by Dave Russell had Yates completely beaten but the ball flashed just wide, and then a superb shot by Peter Feely struck the outside of the post.

The Slough midfield of Gane, Cooke, and Russell gradually took a strangle hold on the match and Staines were forced to give away several free kicks and one taken by Dave Russell was well saved by Yates, and then he shot just wide following a brilliant move that involved Lee and Feely.

As the game appeared to be slipping away from Slough despite their dominance, a brilliant effort by Paul Lee changed the situation when he slipped through the Staines defence and lofted a dipping shot over the head of Yates and just below the bar.

That was quickly followed five minutes later by another Lee goal whose shot Yates reached but failed to prevent the ball entering the net.
