At the third attempt and three false starts Slough Town defeated Maidstone in the second round of the FA Trophy on the ground of Carshalton FC on Wednesday evening.

This success sends the Rebels North on Saturday to tackle Winsford in the third round of this competition, which ends with a Wembley final in April.

A single goal scored in the 24th minute by Kieron Somers was the deciding factor in this hard fought struggle in a sea of mud.

It was third time lucky for Slough, who after scraping a 0-0 draw at Maidstone and having the replay at Wexham Park abandoned with the score at 1-1 in extra time, had to sit through three cancellations of the Carshalton match before getting through to the next round.

But although Slough played extremely well under blustery and wet conditions, Maidstone were not as good as they had been in the other two encounters.

They were without Aitken, men who had played a main part Russo and Stonebridge, three in the other fixtures, and never seemed to adapt to the conditions, being happy to just kick the ball, hoping a Maidstone player would pick it up.

Slough took advantage of this uncertainty well, and totally out-played Maidstone in all departments of the game. Alan Gane celebrated his birthday with a superb performance, while Paul Lee and Dave Russell repeatedly tested the shaky Maidstone defence.

Slough’s goal came in the first half, at a time when both teams were trying to master the conditions, but it was one of the best set-piece goals scored by Slough this season.

Maidstone 'keeper Barry Watling had been penalised for too many steps, and Barrie Friend came up to take the free-kick.

He quickly slipped the ball to his right to Alan Gane, who hit a blistering shot towards goal-but just as the ball looked to be curving away from goal, Kieron Somers rose above the defence to head home a powerful goal.

This was the climax of a good. Slough performance, which was made even better by the fact that they were without Peter Feeley, who is out with a hamstring injury, lan Cooke, out with a broken toe, and Terry Reardon.

But despite this, Slough made Maidstone look like a schoolboys' side. Dave Crush, the Maidstone forward who caused so many problems for the Slough defence in the earlier ties, spent most of his time arguing with the referee, and eventually was booked for dissent - this attitude exemplifying Maidstone's approach to the game.

This was a good win for Slough, who had the capability to use the bad conditions to their advantage.
