After frantic efforts in the injury room at Wexham Park, Slough managed to get 11 players on to the field on Saturday, at Walthamstow, for the Isthmian League match with the Avenue, but even so the substitute was Brian Hall, the team coach, and when Russell was injured and went off he had to play.
All the week, frantic efforts had been made to get the team's walking wounded fit and then to crown it on Friday afternoon it was announced that Roy Davies had been transferred to Reading.
Slough followers, who had made the trip to East London, had a shock when the team changes were announced as they heard that in addition to Beyer and Davies being absent, Lee, Somers and Reardon were all missing and so was Cooke, who was on a business trip to Germany.
The line-up included such unfamiliar first-team names as Mackay, Mason, White, Clift, with Hall as the substitute. The high wind favoured Slough in the first half and they started well enough and inside ten minutes went into the lead when Russell, cutting in from the wing, scored.
Town continued to hold their own, and White, Clift and Russell all made worthwhile efforts to increase the score.
The Avenue set up a lot of dangerous moves but thanks to some good saves by Porter and desperate work from the rearguard, the one goal advantage was maintained until the break.
It was a different story in the second half when Walthamstow, with the wind to help them, swept through the Slough defence, and it was only a matter of time before the Avenue goals came. Mooney scored the equaliser with a well-judged header in the 60th minute and three minutes later the same player beat Porter with a nicely-timed flick.
Slough's last chance vanished when Russell went off injured and Hall came on to make the number up.
In the last five minutes Slough conceded two more goals, both to Avenue striker Mooney, who had a great afternoon.
