THIS was a much better performance by Slough who fought back in great style and well deserved to force a replay. Three times did Hillingdon take the lead and three times did Town get on terms.
The attendance was disappointing, only a few hundred paying for admission and the financial result must have cost both clubs money but with FA Cup ties it is the glorious prospect of getting into the big time in later rounds which is the gilt on the ginger bread.
Slough were without Underwood, on the injured list, and his place was taken by Tripp, while Rhoden came in for Cruse. The departure of Malley, to Leatherhead, has meant a general shake up in the club’s defensive line-up with Turl not looking too happy in a strange position. In fact, Beyer is the only member of last season's back four playing in his accustomed position.
In the tenth minute Porter advanced from his goal-line and Cleary took the opportunity to chip the ball over the keeper's head to put Hillingdon one up. Up to this time Slough had enjoyed more of the play.
Lee equalised when the Hillingdon defence got itself into a tangle and with a clear sight of goal he shot a well judged goal.
Play was swinging from end to end and when Tripp failed to stop Cleary delivering a pinpoint cross which Smith turned past Porter with a diving header, a really classic goal.
It was close on half-time when Somers again put Slough level with a header which Phillips could only help into the roof of the net.
It was much the same story in the second half with Hillingdon once more going ahead with a goal which could best be described as extraordinary. A Turl clearance rebounded straight back into the Slough half and with all their defenders caught four square Cleary pounced on the ball and ran through to drive the ball at Porter who managed to push it out but Cleary at his second attempt made no mistake.
There was still plenty of fight left in Slough and Cooke with a picture book pass set up the third equalising goal when he put Gane through and he in turn centred the ball for Lee to head a fine goal which gave Phillips no chance.
In the last 20 minutes Slough twice almost took the lead when Russell was thwarted only by superb saves from Phillips.
