The few hundred spectators who braved the cold wind on Tuesday evening to watch the Slough versus Barking Rothmans Isthmian League game at Wexham Park, were rewarded with a match packed with excitement and incident.
A last minute winning goal, a Slough player sent off, the first Town man to suffer this punishment since the club joined the Isthmian League, the culprit was Beyer and his offence retaliation, and a Barking goal disallowed.
All this was packed into 90 minutes of cut and thrust football. Slough, without ex-manager Roy Sleap's guidance, introduced Horastead for Tim Smith and Pattison for Hill.
The game opened with a series of hurricane attacks by Barking which saw the Slough rearguard in a lot of difficulty and it was not surprising when the visitors took the lead.
Play had been in progress just five minutes when Burton rounded off a clever attacking movement with a well-taken goal.
The superiority of the Essex team continued and Slough were lucky not to have conceded further goals. Just when some of the Slough fans were beginning to shout "rubbish" to the efforts of their favourites the Rebels began to put their game together and in the 28th minute, after Barking had a goal disallowed, they equalised through Lee following a well-placed free kick.
For the remainder of the half there was a lot of good football and some amazing goalmouth "let-offs" at both ends of the field. Beyer sent off The second half saw Slough really get a grip on the game and they should have gone ahead on a number of occasions. Beyer was ordered off for retaliation, but Slough continued to dictate the tempo of the proceedings, playing a lot of very attractive football in the process.
Just when everyone was settling for a draw and many of the spectators had left the ground, Lee managed to grab the winning goal for Slough after Davies had put him through with less than a minute left for play. It was one of the best games Slough have turned in at Wexham Park for many weeks.
