FA Trophy
At the third time of asking, Slough got the better of Hendon in the second round of the second replay of the F.A. Trophy on Monday evening. The match was played on the ground of the Wembley F.C. at Vale Farm and it was not until extra time had been entered that the all-important goal was scored by Terry Brown.
In the next round on Saturday, Slough have to make the long journey to Runcorn the Northern Premier League side who knocked out Gainsborough Trinity in the previous round.
With Bob Underwood, nursing a dislocated shoulder, Bill Roberts was brought in and made an outstanding success of his role as a key defender.
The first half was very even, Hendon had some bright moments early on, but they achieved nothing tangible. James of Hendon and Barron collided head on and both needed extended attention from the trainers before they were able to continue.
James finally retired at half time but Barron carried on bravely.
The second half did not produce anything very exciting and it seemed as if once again it would be a stalemate but extra time found Slough suddenly transformed into a high pressure attacking machine. Pattison got the ball into the net to complete a clever dribble but offside was given against Hill.
The match had now produced over 200 minutes of football without anything definite being achieved but three minutes from the end of the first extra period the all-important goal was scored.
Bill Roberts took a corner and Beyer flicked the ball on to Brown who turned it past goalkeeper Dalrymple. Brown was smothered in congratulations by his teammates and delighted Slough supporters.
It was now all Slough and twice more did they get the ball into the net but the points were disallowed for infringements. It was a great night for Slough who turned in a fine all round performance under difficult circumstances and a matter of pride for all concerned with the club.
