Slough Town, who have given away some silly points this season surpassed themselves at Green Park Lane on Saturday, when with three minutes left to play they threw away a two goal lead and had to struggle desperately to hang on to just one point.

Slough played the same side that knocked Dover out of the FA Trophy seven days earlier but at no time did they show this kind of form against a very physical Walthamstow team.

The game started slowly with neither side looking particularly sharp, and after a short while the referee decided that the match ball was too soft and called for a replacement that appeared to be too highly inflated and this subsequently led to a lot of misjudgment by players of both sides.

Apart from an open goal being missed by John Knapman, the first 40 minutes produced very little to remember, but the first half ended with a flurry when Underwood got in the way of the ball in a goalmouth scramble and three minutes later Dick Sedgewick was clean through but Paul Brown did just enough to force Sedgewick wide and he hit the outside of the post.

In the 44th minute Roy Davies took an in-swinging corner on the left and to the surprise of everyone it curled straight into the net to give Slough a surprise lead.

Walthamstow countered straight from the re-start and gained a corner which the interval prevented from being taken. Slough looked more aggressive during the early part of the second half and in the 65th minute Terry Brown produced a clever dribble that took him past four Walthamstow defenders but a timely interception robbed him at the last gasp.

Seven minutes later a fine drive by Pattison was just over the bar and then in the 77th minute good work by Tim Smith saw the midfield player lay the ball back to Alan Gane who measured a cross straight on to Roy Davies' head to give Slough a 2-0 lead.

Two minutes later Terry Brown again dribbled through and tried to lob the ball over Townsend when he would have done better to have passed to the unmarked Pattison.

Then Walthamstow began to get a grip on the game and after conceding a series of free kicks on the edge of the penalty area, Slough were unable to prevent Alan Hunter dribbling through the whole of their defence to slip the ball past Barran in the 87th minute.

In the last minute of ordinary time substitute John Neill just managed to reach a ball on the bye line which he crossed accurately on to Alan Hunter's head and the ball was in the net to bring the game to a dramatic close.
