Slough’s sad tale of misfortune continued into 1976 when they sustained their third successive League defeat at "Top Field", Hitchin, on Saturday.
Nothing is going right for the Rebels just now and a harsh penalty decision five minutes from time put the seal on a day of bad luck. Slough were far and away the better side and could easily have enjoyed a two or three goal advantage at half time.
Newcomer Paul Lee from Chelmsford, turned in a first rate performance and may be-just the man the club have been searching for. The decisions of linesman M. Woodhams will long be debated by Slough supporters for it was his influence which was paramount throughout the game.
During the first twenty-five minutes, aided by a strong wind, Slough attacked down the slight slope keeping England international goalkeeper Andy Williams very busy, and both Roy Davies and Paul Lee saw shots go just wide of the post.
However, ultimately Lee dribbled into the penalty area and unleashed a terrific drive which left Williams standing. Slough delightedly ran back to the centre spot together with referee Smith (Hornchurch) when it was noted that Mr. Woodhams was standing on the field with his flag aloft. After a quick consultation to the amazement of everyone present Mr. Smith reversed his decision to that of offside.
Five minutes later Tim Turl collected a loose ball and crossed it to a Hitchin player who promptly put it into his own goal. Again the referee signalled a goal but Mr. Woodhams had his orange flag aloft and again it was no goal.
Turl was offside when he started his run, said Mr. Woodhams. Slough continued to control the match and in the 37th minute Steve Hill just managed to slip a centre from the right past Williams colliding with the goalkeeper as he did so.
Anxious eyes looked for the man with the orange flag but as he was speeding to the centre with his flag down the general conclusion was that the goal had been registered and half time arrived with the 1-0 scoreline providing a rather rough justice.
The visitors, despite facing the wind in the second half, had far more of the play than Hitchin. had shown in the first and Maurice Hawkins playing in his 500th game for the club did well to clear off the line with Williams again beaten whilst Mally also headed just over the bar.
It came as some surprise when Neil Bunker equalised with 20 minutes left with an almost identical goal to that which Hill scored in the first half. Slough’s cup of woe was filled to overflowing five minutes from the end when Hitchin were awarded a penalty and scored the winning goal.
