Christmas has traditionally been a good time for the Slough club in recent years but 1975 has proved a dismal holiday period with defeats against strong opposition and not a goal scored in the two games.

Dagenham beat Slough by three clear goals in Essex and league leaders Enfield came to Wexham Park on Saturday and won by 2-0.

Had these games produced Town victories the club would start 1976 in contention for League honours, but the best that can now be hoped for is a top half of the table position.

Oddly enough Enfield never looked a great side in this match but they had the outstanding player on the field, Dave Lawrence, and even more galling to Slough fans was the fine performances of two local players, Micky O'Sullivan and Keith Searle for the visitors.

Enfield had the upper hand during the early stages but Slough with considerable help from Paul Barron, survived the pressure and almost snatched the lead when Pattison robbed Jennings and floated the ball across but it was eventually scrambled clear.

The first goal came on the half-hour when Enfield gained a corner, and following the flag kick, Barron was impeded by two Enfield forwards and the best he could do was punch the ball against a goal post and into the net.

To the amazement of the 1,000 plus crowd, the referee gave a goal and dramatically ran the length of the ground to show his firmness. The official refused to consult a linesman, a most un-Christmas-like attitude in view of his complete dis-interest in players of both sides who stole yards throughout the match from throw-ins.

Seven minutes later Slough were awarded a penalty when Lee was tripped by Day, but no one was surprised when out of form Roy Davies had his "spot kick" saved - Slough have now missed more penalties than they have scored this season.

The "Rebels" were on top for most of the second-half, Pattison having two good opportunities to score, as did Alan Gane.

However, they looked particularly flimsy and disjointed compared with the league leaders, and when man of the match Lawrence placed a pinpoint centre on to Searle's head it put the match beyond all doubt.

It does begin to look as though Roy Sleap's search for a good forward blend has come to grief as a result of all the midfield being out of form at the same time. One can only hope that 1976 will see a return to form for the side, who can play much better than this.
