Slough journeyed to Hanwell on Saturday and were beaten by the odd goal in seven. Hanwell took the field with nine men and Slough had the advantage of the wind. Despite this fact Syms netted for Hanwell within the first minute.
Slough pressed severely after this, and from a pass by Smith, Towell made a good effort to equalise, but his final shot went a little wide. Pearce tested Werrell, but the latter easily saved. The Hanwell team was now completed, but Slough continued to press, Wright making a poor show in front of goal, and the same player missed a chance from a pass by Steptoe following a free kick.
Eventually Slough equalised through a penalty which was taken by Towell, but within a minute the homesters took the lead through the agency of Elliott, who, whilst the Slough men were appealing for some infringement, raced away on his own.
From a free kick Leat made a grand shot, but it was well saved. Just after, however, Leat equalised from a neat pass by Smith.
Shortly before the interval, Leat scored a third goal for his side, and Slough crossed over leading by three goals to two.
On crossing over Hanwell pressed and Werrell made a fine save from Pearce. The latter was only two or three feet away from goal when he shot, but the custodian tipped the leather over the bar. Give and take play followed. Once there was an exciting tussle in front of the Slough goal but the ball was sent out of danger.
On another occasion Werrell was badly kicked as he was saving. Hanwell equalised from a penalty, which was given for a very technical foul in the limited area. After this each side strove for the winning goal, and it fell to the homesters with almost the last kick of the match.
Taken all through the game was a poor one and was not well controlled by the referee. In the second half the Slough halves failed to keep the home forwards in check. Werrell gave a grand display during some exciting times in the latter moiety.
Leat worked splendidly and repeatedly dropped back to assist the defence. Copus, the Hanwell custodian, played much below form, and several times used unnecessary vigour in dealing with the Slough forwards.
