League
These teams met before a good number of spectators at the Dolphin, on Saturday afternoon, this being the return league match.
Several of the players selected for Slough were unable to turn out and places were consequently found for Hopkins, Mines and Hunt, three of the reserve team.
The homesters were the first to attack and gained a corner. The place kick was nicely dropped in, and Deuton tried a shot behind which there was little power and the custodian easily cleared.
Leat returned a long shot which went wide. After this Reading had matters mostly their way. From a free kick Chappell got through, but lost his opportunity by reckless shooting. Slough again attacked and from a good centre by Smith, Luke tried an overhead shot which Caulfield caught and threw away.
Just after a splendid shot by Frame was cleared by Werrell, Reading continued to pass and Werrrell saved grandly from Frame and Martin. Slatter also put in a lovely shot which passed the goal month and went outside.
Smith got in another fine run for Slough, but he made the mistake of shooting instead of passing when the other forwards were well up. A minute later Smith received a pass from Luke and tested Caulfield with a regular beauty.
Then Reading lost a golden opportunity of opening the score. Reynolds received a pass from Frame and shot straight. Werrell managed to stop the shot but could not get it away, and Chappell returned, but again Werrell checked the flight of the leather. This left Seymour, who was close in goal, with a splendid chance, but he spoilt it by shooting right across the goal.
Shortly before half time an exciting tussle took place in front of the Reading goal Hunt put in a couple of capital shots and from the latter of these Lake shot hard at goal. Caulfield caught the ball and Mines and Luke tried to hustle him between the sticks.
The goalkeeper dodged about with the leather and was eventually penalised for carrying it beyond the required distance. The free kick, however, came to naught, for as it was taken the whistle sounded half time with the score sheet blank.
Five minutes from the restart Martin beat Leat in a struggle in the right corner and centred. In its flight the ball struck Wilmot on the arm, and the referee awarded a penalty, a decision that was not very acceptable to the spectators. Day took the kick and landed the globe safely into the net.
Following this bit of bad luck everything seemed to go wrong with Slough. A few minutes after Hopkins had his ankle injured by one of the Reading players and had to retire. The visitors continued to have the best of the game and when the second half had been
on about twenty minutes, Chappell drove in a good shot. Werrell ran out to clear but fell, and while he was on the ground Frame nipped in and directed the ball between the goal posts.
Once Mines got right through and should have scored but he shot wide. Five minutes later Reading obtained a third goal from a corner. The placed kick was taken with judgement and Butler got in a terrific drive. Werrell made an effort to stop the shot, but he was only able to touch the ball with his fingers as it passed him and lodged safely in the net.
Then, for a time, Slough were seen to greater advantage, and Leat, who had gone centre half, initiated one or two attacks but on each occasion, Caulfield was a saving clause.
