League
These teams met at the Dolphin on Saturday afternoon in the League contest, but the game did not attract very much attention, the game being a poor one.
A late start was made and consequently only forty minutes each way was played. Slough could only muster ten men at the commencement, Kippin who had been chosen failing to put in an appearance but later Spicer, who was pressed into turning out. Wycombe first got away but Slough immediately returned, and Vickers was called on to save.
Shortly after the homesters got their full compliment of players in the field. Play in the first quarter of an hour was of a poor depiction. Once Slough sent the leather into the net but the whistle had previously gone for offside. Wright conceded a corner for Wycombe but nothing came of it. Wycombe attacked, and in clearing, Crocker fell having an open goal. Leat, however, dropped back and succeeded in getting the ball well out into the field.
Another corner fell to the visitors, and this was well placed, but Langley shot into the side of the net. Crocker had to deal with several shots, a hot one from Pheby being safely negotiated; Payne also shot by.
Slough went down but a bye was the only result. At the opposite end Leat gave a corner which was sent behind. A long kick by Wilmot sent Poole going but he was fouled. Leat took the place kick dropping it with excellent judgement into the mouth of goal, though Vickers got it away safely. Serls returned a smart shot, but the custodian was on the alert. Wycombe returned to the attack and Pym came to the rescue. Wycombe pressed, but spoilt their chance by over passing in front of goal instead of shooting. Serls was responsible for a fine effort, but there was no one to help him and the opposing backs cleared. At half time there had been no scoring.
Slough were seen to greater advantage and for a time had the best of the game. A fine shot by Wright was got away by the goalkeeper. The Wanderers left wing got away and matters began to look dangerous but for the timely aid of Leat, who rushed down and beat the pair. Just after Pheby made another attempt, but again Leat, who was playing a fine defensive game, eat him.
After fifteen minutes play, Gates banged over a splendid shot, and Pheby, who was standing right in goal, just touched it into the net. Probably Gates’ shot would have scored, but Pheby was palpably offside at the time he netted.
Slough returned to the attack, and Serls missed a lovely opening from a clever pass by Wright; he was standing but a few yards from goal, but got the leather round the wrong side of the upright.
Then for the first time the game livened up and everything went in favour of Slough for about ten minutes, but they could not score, though Wright and Steptoe both had good tries.
At the end of that time the Wycombe forwards broke away, and Pheby finished the effort by adding a second goal, the ball hitting the upright and turning into the net.
After this the game slackened again, but five minutes from the finish, a free kick was awarded to Slough. This was taken by Leat who sent the leather out to Poole, the latter banged over a beautiful centre which Serls sent into the net.
