These teams met at Maidenhead on Saturday in the league competition, when the turf was on the hard side.
Owing to indisposition Stevens was unable to turn out, and Steptoe filled the vacancy at the last moment. H. E. Smith, who was given his first trial for the senior 11, got into the wrong train, and was consequently 20 minutes late.
Slough commenced with 10 men, and at the start Maidenhead certainly had the best of the deal, and Werrell had two or three stiff shots to deal with, Worcester being very active at centre.
Slough improved as the game advanced, but the shots were very feeble. The forwards repeatedly beat the opposing arms, but when they got near goal they seem to lose command of the ball. With the arrival of Smith, Slough began to get the upper hand, although play was fairly even until half-time, when the score sheet was a blank.
In the second half, the visitors certainly had quite three parts of the game, and repeatedly attacked the Maidenhead goal, yet they utterly failed in that one essential – scoring.
13 minutes from time, Maidenhead were lucky in getting a goal which won them the match. One of the home backs, with a huge kick, send the leather beyond the Slough defence, and Werrell ran out punch away a long dropping shot. He misjudged it, however, and just touching the ball, it passed over his head and rolled slowly into the net. Several of the Slough defenders rushed back to save the situation, they were too late.
Following this, Leat, who was playing a fine game went up forward, Smith dropping to half and Steptoe at back. From now to the finish Slough pressed Maidenhead in their own territory, but they could not score. Once Fountain put in a beauty which struck the crossbar and turned over the top.
Two or three corners followed, but Gibson was not to be beaten, and the home side retired victors by a solitary goal.
