Lee Togwell rescued the Rebels’ unbeaten run with the equaliser in a scrappy 1-1 draw at Cheshunt, writes David Tancred.

The first big chance of the game for the Rebels was on 12 minutes after the ball fell to Elliot Benyon in the box with the number 10’s strike falling just past the post.

A minute later, Slough had another chance with Francis Amartey’s strike from close range inside the area being superbly blocked out for a corner.

Will Dennis was called into action on 18 as Ken Charles was first onto a looping ball with the Slough keeper doing brilliantly to get a touch and stop the ball from going over the line.

The Rebels struck the post on 33 after Johnny Goddard hit a brilliant ball into Benyon, who twisted and turned with his looping effort crashing against the post.

Slough’s last big chance of the half was on 40 with Johnny Goddard getting down the right hand side and putting in a delightful ball to an unmarked Ogo Obi, who rose to meet the ball with his header going just over the bar.

Cheshunt took the lead on 49 minutes through Joe Re after he beat the Slough defence to a looping ball with the player twisting and turning before drilling a low shot past Dennis.

The Rebels got a quick equaliser within six minutes. A cross from Gabe George on the left was controlled by Amartey, who played it to his left where Togwell was on hand to smash the ball into the roof of the net.

On 64, Amartey continued to terrorise the Cheshunt defence with the number 7 drilling a ball into the box but Cheshunt were able to clear their lines.

Amartey nearly scored one of the goals of the season on 70 after the forward ran all the way from his own half, drifting past the Cheshunt players with ease and into the box however Adam Desbois did brilliantly to deny him.

With twelve minutes remaining Amartey caused yet more problems for the home side after he got down the left hand side and slotted the ball back to Johnny Goddard, whose strike was deflected out for a corner.

Neither side was able to find a winner in the scrappy closing stages, with a number of fouls denying either team the chance to attack.

The Rebels maintain their undefeated run in 2023 with the club now unbeaten in their last five league games.

Slough are next in action on Saturday with the Rebels welcoming Dover Athletic to Arbour Park.
