Slough climbed into second place after a second away win in the space of four days, their latest success coming at The Jezzards Beveree.

The Rebels trailed at the break, but a quickfire double from Ben Harris and George Wells early in the second half put them ahead – and Slough could have extended their lead even further through a penalty, but Ben Harris fired well wide.

Slough showed just one change from Saturday’s win at Braintree, with Ben Harris replacing Dan Roberts in attack.

And the visitors created the first half-chance of the game when goalkeeper Dan Lincoln came for a Warren Harris cross under pressure, but could only drop it before being rescued by a defender.

But it was the Beavers that opened the scoring on 16 minutes. An attempted short corner fell into the path of Jake Gray, whose looping cross found Luke Ruddick – and the captain struck the ball into the bottom corner for his second goal in four days.

Slough struggled to test Lincoln again in the first half as they played up the slope, with Hampton’s experienced centre back partnership of Ruddick and Dean Inman marshalling them well.

Six minutes remained in the first half when the Rebels created their best chance. Max Worsfold’s cross was headed back across goal by Ryan Bird, and the ball fell for Warren Harris who made space for a shot, only to see Lincoln save with his legs.

A minute before the break, Lincoln saved from the same player again, after the winger had run on to Ben Harris’s flick from a Jack Turner goal kick.

The second half was a different story, as Slough began to show their quality straight from the off. Lee Togwell won a free kick just outside the Hampton penalty area, and Ben Harris deceived the hosts as he struck it low and hard into the bottom corner, with Lincoln motionless.

Minutes later, Slough were ahead. Lincoln again looked susceptible from a Worsfold corner as he tried but failed to punch clear, and George Wells converted from close range with his back to goal.

Less than a minute later, Matty Lench was cynically brought down in the box, giving Slough a penalty – but Ben Harris missed the target by a large margin, meaning the home side were still in the contest.

Lench had a chance to score himself shortly after when Lincoln could only punch weakly again, but his shot was straight at the keeper.

Hampton managed to stem the tide and regain a foothold in the match, enjoying much more of the ball. The hosts thought they had levelled with around a quarter of an hour remaining, but Danilo Orsi-Dadomo’s finish was correctly ruled out for offside after the ball was deflected into his path.

Slough remained a threat on the break, and great work from Worsfold went unrewarded when his low cross into the six yard box was missed by everyone – and substitute Dan Roberts also had a sight of goal, but could not beat Lincoln after connecting with another cross from the left winger.

A huge three points for the Rebels was only confirmed after an outstanding save from Turner, who prevented Jake Gray’s effort from nestling in the top corner with an acrobatic save.
