Slough Town slipped to a disappointing defeat at East Thurrock United on Saturday afternoon.

The Rebels’ second narrow 1-0 defeat of the season came after Danilo Orsi-Dodomo’s late goal, with Slough left to rue a series of missed chances.

Joint managers Neil Baker and Jon Underwood were quick to recognise that their side were not good enough on the day, with Baker commenting:

“Outside of the first 20 minutes, it was a very poor performance from our lads especially going forward.

“Whilst I’m bitterly disappointed, realism has kicked in - we are competing well, creating chances, and should have more points than we do. We’re only one point off sixth place – the league is so tight because it is so competitive!”

Underwood added: “Nothing unlucky about today’s defeat, too many simply weren’t good enough on the day. Disappointed that we let down an excellent travelling support”.

Slough travelled well to Rookery Hill in Corringham, with Rebels supporters making up a good proportion of the 327 in attendance. And the visitors started well, with Warren Harris firing in an effort which was well handled by Jack Giddens. Shortly after, Chris Flood went clean through on goal, but could not find the target.

Just before the quarter hour mark, George Wells saw a shot parried by Giddens with Manny Williams having a shot blocked as the ball rebounded to him.

Williams went closer still soon after, hitting the crossbar after Scott Davies had played a free kick to Simon Dunn.

Slough continued to look the better side and Wells found Warren Harris in the box on 34 minutes, but his effort was blocked.

East Thurrock grew into the game and Alfie Egan headed their first real chance wide. Soon after, Mark Nisbet did well to nick the ball off the toe of Jack Simmons in a dangerous position.

Early in the second period, the ‘Rocks’ returning striker Sam Higgins fired a half-chance wide, but Slough continued to create chances. Giddens did well to hold on to the ball under his crossbar from Dunn, and Josh Jackman’s shot was saved following good work from Flood and substitute Perry Coles.

Neither side could stamp their authority on the match as it became scrappier, and it looked likelier that a single goal would win it.

Flood was denied by Giddens after being found by Louie Soares and Coles saw a shot deflected over, but on 78 minutes came the game’s decisive moment.

East Thurrock counter-attacked and a ball over the top played Orsi-Dodomo through on goal – and the striker made no mistake in rounding Jack Turner and slotting home.

The hosts could have killed the game off with Slough looking shocked, Egan doing well to hold off Wells before getting in a shot which Turner saved.
