Rebels striker Steve Thompson played two matches in one day and still helped to hoist Slough four points clear at the top of the Vauxhall Opel League with a 67th minute winner on Tuesday night.

New signing Mark Adams, who made a quiet, but promising debut for the Rebels after a three week lay off laid the ball firmly into Thompson who knocked the ball up and powered home on the turn from the edge of the box.

RAF P.E. instructor Thompson, had only just played for the Combined Services against a Chelsea First Eleven at Aldershot and dashed to Sandy Lane to turn out for the Rebels.

Manager Alan Davies was full of praise for the well-tuned striker. " He arrived three minutes before the game and scored a cracking goal-it speaks volumes for the player. In fact Ray Duffy was playing with a broken nose and Tony Dennis with 'flu, so I was very pleased with the commitment shown by the players- you can't ask for more' said Davies.

Turning to Mark Adams Davies added " He's only had one training session with us and it was his first game for three weeks since injury against us. The first game for a new club is always a little bit strange but on tonight's performance I've no doubt he's going to be a real asset to the club ".

Slough took a commanding role in the opening exchanges and could well have had a penalty when Neal Stanley was brought down, but the appeals were in vain. Kingstonian centre back Micky Droy proved a constant threat as Slough gave away more than their fair share of corners with 'keeper Trevor Bunting performing marvellously between the sticks.

With eight clean sheets in 12 games, Bunting did well to subdue the first half efforts of ex-Rebel Jimmy Brown and former Wycombe striker Graham Westley, with Kingstonian forced to take Brown off after a collision.

With this behind them, Slough showed greater composure after the break with stalwart centre-back Jeff Bateman unleashing a rare 30-yard drive that rocked the crossbar and dropped behind the net.

As Slough took firm control of the game, a goal became imminent with Dennis and Adams giving the width Davies has been looking for all season since the loss of Kenny Wilson.

And it was Adams who showed some neat control down the left flank before laying into the feet of Thompson to turn the ever present Droy and shoot home in style. Kingstonian, playing on the unfamiliar turf and sand of Tooting and Mitcham's ground, almost pulled a goal back at the death when Westley had a clear shot at goal from inside the box, but screwed wide.

Slough now sit at the top of the table with all to play for away to Dulwich on Saturday and then Bognor on Monday night. Rebels boss Alan Davies concluded " It's a nice position to be in but it's still the early part of the season and we won't get carried away".
