FOR 77 minutes Slough Town struggled to overcome lowly Leatherhead at Wexham Park on Saturday, and just when the match looked to be heading for a draw a mistake by goalkeeper Peter Caswell gave the Rebels the break they needed and three vital Berger Isthmian League, Premier Division points.

A harmless looking shot by Micky Kiely from the edge of the penalty area edge deflected by a Leatherhead defender and somehow slipped through the grasp of Caswell into the net. Before this goal Slough had looked unlikely to break down a Leatherhead side who came to Wexham Park intent on surviving with a draw.

Once again the Rebels were severely depleted, Pat Morrissey and Barry Friend were both injured, Dave Yerby had a cold, and Terry Reardon and Steve Norman were still suspended. Manager Laurie Churchill gave defender Neil Pettifer and striker Rowan Dodds their league debuts this term. Both players fitted into the side well, with Dodds in particular looking impressive.

Leatherhead had their best chance of the half after 15 minutes. A corner from the right was headed into the goalmouth by Dave Dyer and after Richard Teale had failed to gather the ball safely it fell to Terry Page. However from about five yards his shot was blocked on the line by Vic Akers.

Minutes later Leatherhead lost central defender Dyer with a head injury and he was replaced by Russell Cox. Despite this blow to the visitors the closest Slough came to scoring was after 32 minutes. A free kick from Akers, on the left, was laid into the path of Dave Russell by Eggie James and his powerful shot was well kept out by Caswell.

Within five minutes of the second half Leatherhead's Barry Davies, dissent, and Kiely, dangerous play, had both been booked. Leatherhead then almost opened the scoring with 58 minutes gone. A poor clearance by Teale was picked up by John Doyle, and with the 'keeper off his line he let fly from all of 35 yards. Although the shot beat Teale it went inches wide of the post.

Just when it began to look as if Slough would have to settle for a draw the vital goal came from Kiely, his 11th of the season.
