Rebel James McMaster offers league sponsors Vanarama a personal take on 2019 - and explains his own story.
We’re nearly half-way through the season already - how do you sum things up?
Much better than expected, much better. I was concerned about this so called second season syndrome that everyone speaks about, but we’ve not only managed to build on what was achieved in our first year, we’ve managed to improve considerably. A*.
What do you put that down to?
Good management, a squad who believe it’s a privilege to play for the club and a realistic set of supporters.
The busy Christmas and New Year calendar - love it or hate it?
If you don’t love this time of the year as a football fan, take up cricket!
What will 2020 bring for the club?
More of the same, please! Every year we have grown as a club since returning home. Dare we dream of promotion? Of course we can.
Christmas is coming - if you could gift wrap one present for your managers, what would it be?
A ten-year contract! They have done a truly magnificent job.
From what you have seen, who is winning the National League South?
As much as I would love to say us, Wealdstone have just looked outstanding. It’s about their wobble - it will come, but when it comes how much of a wobble will it be, and which clubs will take advantage? There’s still a long way to go.
Your Player of the Season so far?
I have been very impressed by a number of players, but George Wells is fantastic week-in, week-out.
We all love away days: what one sticks out this season as your favourite and why?
This one couldn’t be easier to answer. Dartford away. 2-0 down it looked like our great run was over. We should have known better! If one game encapsulated the spirit in the club, it was that one. I had to go home for a lie down.
We all love our club but why did you start following the Rebels in the first place?
I started to connect properly when the club moved into Arbour Park. Like a lot of people that was also going to be crucial to growing interest levels. I’m 24 and go with my brother and our dad.
What makes Slough so unique and so special to you?
How the club have gone from being homeless to what it is today is such a short space of time. There will be challenging times but at the moment I can’t think of many clubs like this.
