Are we really over a quarter of the way through already? Six weeks and some 11 matches later, we’re left wondering if we can still call this the start of the season!
It’s a good job results have picked up - Slough fans have become accustomed to sitting pretty at this stage over the past few years.
We’ve been dusting off the history books to assess how the Rebels have begun in seasons gone by - and if, ultimately, the first two months really mean anything at all.
Let’s go back and find out more. The Vanarama National League South adventure started with the side sitting fifth this time a year ago with 20 points on the board. Although an 11th place finish was forthcoming it was still a very positive first year back for the club.
In 2017-18, an even better start was made - no wonder it ended in promotion. Starting with nine Southern League wins from 11, the team had 27 points on the board and sat in second.
The year before, Slough were once again fast starters - top of the table in late September 2016 they couldn’t quite hold their position of power but did make the play-offs.
It wasn’t the same story back in 2015-16. The team were 20th 11 games in after collecting only nine points from 33 available.
It’s not easy picking the bones out of the Vanarama National League South but with the club looking to break into the top seven, what does recent history tell us about the teams who occupy those promotion places at this stage?
Three of last year’s top seven at this point of the season were there once it mattered in April - Woking, Welling United and Wealdstone. Billericay Town, who were top of the lot, didn’t even make the play-offs - while eventual champions Torquay United were down in 13th place.
A year earlier, five of the top seven towards the end of September held firm. Eventual winners Havant & Waterlooville joined Braintree Town, Dartford, Chelmsford City and Truro City in the play-offs.
Back in 2016-17, there were of course only five clubs who could earn promotion places. Three of which were there after 11 matches - winners Maidenhead United, Chelmsford City and Ebbsfleet United all stayed the pace.
Time will tell if Slough can shoehorn their way in!
