Slough Town were again left to rue a number of missed chances in this narrow Bank Holiday Monday defeat against Dulwich Hamlet.

A first Rebels goal for Louie Soares was not enough to earn Slough any points, as Dulwich fought back to win with goals from Dipo Akinyemi and Nyren Clunis at Arbour Park.

Slough had the better of the first half and managed to carve out good chances throughout the match, even as Dulwich improved in the second period.

Early on, James Dobson was allowed to travel a long way forward before ultimately firing wide from the edge of the box, and later Ben Harris headed narrowly over from a trademark long Guy Hollis throw.

An even better opportunity was created for Perry Coles just before the half hour mark as Louie Soares crossed in from the right, but the striker headed straight at Dulwich keeper Preston Edwards.

Minutes later, Edwards tipped the ball past the post from a long-range Dobson piledriver as Slough continued to put the pressure on, but the visitors almost broke away to score immediately, with Jack Turner needing to rush out and block from Nyren Clunis after he was played in over the top of the Slough defence.

Slough then countered and Dobson should have done better than shoot wide from around 15 yards out.

The first half ended goalless, but the Rebels took just 21 seconds to find a route to goal in the second. Slough won the ball in midfield and George Wells sent the ball up field. Coles played Soares into space on the right, and the winger chose to lash the ball goalwards with power from just outside the box, with the ball hitting the bottom corner of the Dulwich goal.

However, Dulwich came back into the game strongly and, minutes after Turner had superbly tipped the ball wide from Anthony Cook’s shot, the keeper was unable to prevent substitute Dipo Akinyemi from heading in a cross from the same player.

Just four minutes later, Slough were wrongly denied a goal which would have put them back in front – Turner’s long kick upfield was flicked on by Soares to Coles, who had timed his run to perfection before latching on to the ball and firing past Edwards with a first-time effort – but he was denied by a linesman’s flag.

Instead, Dulwich almost took the lead when Akinyemi worked space before seeing a shot rebound back off the post from just inside the box.

Slough were frustrated again when neat interplay between Dobson and Coles resulted in the latter hitting a weak effort straight at Preston, and then the keeper showed tremendous athleticism again to tip a header from Ben Harris wide of the goal.

Hollis put a free header off target from the resulting corner and Dobson drilled a dangerous ball across the face of goal and wide, and it increasingly looked like it would not be Slough’s day.

And so it was to prove as, with just five minutes remaining, Dulwich grabbed the winning goal. There was more than a hint of bad luck again as Chris Flood got back well to block a shot from Ashley Carew, but the ball bounced kindly for Clunis, who fired past the helpless Turner.

Dulwich Hamlet: Preston Edwards, Anthony Cook, Sanchez Ming, Ibrahim Kargbo, Quade Taylor, Michael Kamara (c), Nyren Clunis, Ashley Carew, Gavin Tomlin (Nathan Green), Dominic Vose, Walter Figueira (Dipo Akinyemi). Unused substitutes: Calo Guimaraes, Michael Onovwigun, Daniel Pappoe.
