Slough were left frustrated on Tuesday evening as the Rebels were held to a draw by fourth-bottom side Kings Langley at Arbour Park.

Joint manager Neil Baker conceded that a draw was the fair result, and that his side were poor in the second half, playing with a lack of intensity.

The home side made a good start but couldn’t turn their pressure into a goal. Matt Lench’s long-range shot was easily saved, and Kings Langley cleared a number of corners.

Slough then had a lucky escape on ten minutes as a foul on Steven Ward led to a free kick 30 yards out. Matt Ball stepped up but saw his fine effort rebound back off the underside of the crossbar before being cleared.

The Rebels saw a lot of the ball without being able to find a way through Kings Langley’s well-organised defence, but did manage to open the scoring on the half hour mark via a set piece.

Alan Inns rose to meet James Dobson’s in swinging delivery and the ball hit the back of the net despite the efforts of a defender on the line.

Dobson hit a snapshot which was held by goalkeeper Martin Bennett, whilst the visitors were always a threat, with Jack Turner doing well to cut out a dangerous cross on the stroke of half time.

Slough also found the second half difficult, as a committed performance from their visitors meant a lack of clear opportunities. A corner from Lench was headed narrowly wide by Ben Harris, and later Dobson’s mazy run ended with him shooting over the crossbar.

And on 72 minutes Kings Langley were handed a route back into the match with the award of a penalty. The ball was headed across goal and Nathan Smart attempted to chest the ball away but was adjudged to have handled – leaving Ball the chance to equalise from the spot, and he fired into the bottom corner past the outstretched arm of Turner.

Slough’s response was to introduce Gavin James in place of Ben Harris as the Rebels looked to regain the lead, but instead almost fell behind with Turner required to make a magnificent one-handed save from Gareth Price’s long-range strike, and later denied the same player as he drove in a shot from a narrow angle.

The home side laboured, and George Wells tried his luck from outside the box, but the ball flew wide.

There was a huge positive for Slough with the introduction of Harrison Gilkes for his league debut, and he was quickly involved, feeding James but the striker’s curling effort was well held by Bennett and the home side’s final chance had gone.
