Slough Town’s long winning streak is over after this disappointing defeat at St Neots Town.

The Rebels came into the match having won their previous eight matches in all competitions, a run stretching back to 15th August – but two goals from Tom Meechan and a late strike from Dion Sembie-Ferris sealed the win for St Neots.

Meechan returned to the Saints this week on loan from National League South side Hungerford Town, and played a starring role as he inspired his side to win all three points, and the home side could in fact have won by a greater margin as they outplayed Slough on the day.

Everything was going according to plan with just four minutes played though, as Chris Flood netted after seeing his penalty – won after Simon Dunn was tripped by Ryan Horne – well saved by Mike Emery.

But the response from St Neots was immediate, as they launched the ball forward quickly after kicking off. A cross from the right side dropped to Meechan, who sent a shot bouncing into the turf and into the bottom corner past Jack Turner.

Slough lost Dunn to injury with just 20 minutes played, and St Neots put the Rebels under severe pressure. Turner saved an effort from Sembie-Ferris with his legs before Liam McDevitt had a header well saved by the Slough stopper.

James Dobson’s long shot was comfortably saved by Emery but it was the home side creating the chances, with Turner making a full-length from Sembie-Ferris and then keeping out a header from Dylan Williams.

As half time approached Flood volleyed over the bar from a good position, but the two sides went in for their team-talks with St Neots firmly on top and Slough struggling to get going despite their early lead.

Williams headed a Meechan cross over early in the second half, but Slough had perhaps their best spell of the game with Dobson volleying wide and Flood seeing a header saved brilliantly by Emery.

Meechan went agonisingly close to giving his side the lead on 65 minutes when he cut in from the left and beat Turner with a fierce strike, but saw it crash off the underside of the bar.

Slough were on the back foot and Turner again kept the scores level with a super save from Meechan on 76 minutes. But it came as no surprise when St Neots took the lead just two minutes later courtesy of the same player.

Seizing upon Sembie-Ferris’ flick, he somehow evaded the attention of three Slough defenders to swivel on the edge of the box and finish high past Turner.

Meechan was denied yet again as Turner stuck out a foot with ten minutes remaining, but with Slough pushing forward and leaving gaps at the back, St Neots took full advantage to add a third goal deep into stoppage time. Sembie-Ferris slotted the ball low into the net, leaving Slough to reflect on a rare disappointing day.
