After a week of highs and lows on the road, with a thumping victory at Leamington last Saturday and a heavy defeat at King’s Lynn on Tuesday evening, Slough returned to Arbour Park and claimed all three points with a narrow, scrappy win against Dunstable Town.

Fans of symmetry will have enjoyed the fact that the result and scorer here were exactly the same as in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, with Simon Dunn’s goal early in the second half once again securing the win against their 13th-placed opponents.

Slough had the only real chance of the first half as Dunn’s cross was met by Manny Williams, whose point blank header was somehow tipped over by Dunstable keeper Jack Smith. Earlier in the half, Williams fired a half volley over from the edge of the box and Chris Flood sliced a shot wide.

The second half came to life seven minutes in as Dunn forced the ball home from close range after Chris Flood and Gavin James had both seen their efforts cleared off the line. As the ball hit the net, there were no fewer than five Dunstable players on the ground, testament to the desperate defending that had so nearly seen the chance evaporate.

Slough had the better of the play after the goal, but Mark Scott was required to get down low and save an effort from Shane Bush.

With 20 minutes remaining, an off the ball incident resulted in both sides being reduced to ten men. Visiting striker Josh Oyinsan swung an arm into the face of Nathan Smart, and Oyinsan was given a straight red card by referee Tim Donnellan. However, after consultation with both assistant referees, Donnellan went back to issue Smart a second booking after he had squared up to Oyinsan.

Substitute James Dobson went close with a free kick, and Flood put an effort well over the bar, whilst the industrious Williams shot wide from the edge of the box after pinching the ball from an opponent and driving through midfield.

Dunstable’s best player, Zack Reynolds, nearly forced an equaliser in the last minute after a mazy run from right back, but this was the only real scare for the Rebels who could have made absolutely sure of the win deep into stoppage time, but Smith pushed aside Williams’ shot and sponsors’ man-of-the-match Lee Togwell had a follow-up effort blocked.
