Gavin James scored twice as Slough dominated visitors Weymouth and strengthened their claim on a top five place with a comprehensive victory over the Dorset side.

Guy Hollis returned to the squad after serving his three match ban, but took a place on the bench as the Slough joint managers kept faith with the starting eleven which was victorious over Dunstable on Saturday.

And whilst Saturday’s match was tight and scrappy, it took the Rebels only four minutes to get off the mark against the Terras. From there, the home side went from strength to strength, showing signs of a return to their early season form with exceptional passing, movement and pressing all evening.

Gavin James tried to turn inside Stephane Zubar but was tripped by the former Plymouth Argyle and Bournemouth centre-back, leading to the award of a spot kick. James stepped up and confidently lifted the ball high into the net to give his side the lead.

Just a minute later, Slough went so close to doubling their lead, but Manny Williams’ fierce effort was turned over at point-blank range by Tom McHale after the keeper had beaten away a drive from Simon Dunn.

The Rebels’ passing was crisp and accurate, and a fine flowing move ended with Lee Togwell having a long-range effort easily held on ten minutes, and later Dunn saw a shot blocked after Paul Stonehouse’s cross fell to him.

Slough continued to dominate the play in the first half without creating much until stoppage time, as first James put just too much weight onto a through ball for Williams, and then McHale was called upon to turn aside a fierce strike from Chris Flood.

Weymouth started the second half in more positive fashion, but found themselves two goals down on 53 minutes as Slough started to turn the screw.

The goal was made possible by the pass of the night from Dunn, whose inch-perfect through pass from around 35 yards found Flood, who took the ball towards goal and side footed it past McHale.

It wasn’t until the 56th minute that the visitors had their first attempt at goal, but Jordan Copp’s shot from outside the box went harmlessly wide after he embarked on a long run.

Slough continued to attack at will, and went close to what would have been a superb third on the hour mark, but Dunn’s chipped ball across goal was just too far ahead of both James and Togwell.

Sean Fraser blazed a good chance over the bar and James looked frustrated as a shot from Williams found its way through to him, but he was unable to divert the ball past McHale.

Chances continued to come for the rampant Rebels, with Flood spinning and firing wide from 15 yards and James seeing a shot cannon off the head of Toby Downs.

But James got the second goal his performance deserved with four minutes remaining, as he nodded a corner down and into the net, with McHale seemingly distracted by Mark Nisbet, who tried to get a touch to the ball himself.

Slough keeper Mark Scott was untroubled for almost the entire evening, and even when Weymouth found some space in the penalty area deep into stoppage time, substitute Stewart Yetton fired off target.

Weymouth: Tom McHale, Ashley Wells, Jake Wannell, Stephane Zubar (c), Toby Downs, Dean Evans, Jordan Copp, Chris Allen, Stuart Fleetwood, Charlie Davis, Mark Molesley. Substitutes: Calvin Brooks, Stewart Yetton, Billy Lowes, Aaron Rodriguez, Dominic Panesar-Dower.
